Dahlonega
My husband and I live in North Florida currently, but are looking to possibly relocate to the Dahlonega/Cumming area. We are in our 50s, no children and would like to semi-retire. We tend to be of a more liberal mindset and are looking for a place where we could meet people and fit in. We love to do all the outdoor things that you can do up there like hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. Can anyone tell us anything about these areas such as housing or rental costs, growth projections and conveniences? Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Dahlonega in my opinion is God's Country. If I stay in Georgia after retirement
(10 years or less) this town is one of the first on my list.
The town is building a 55+ community looking over the mountains.
The town is small and so far, has not been invaded by the hordes, though there are a many dirty developers attempting to destroy what is nice, but so far meeting resistance.
Cumming has not been so lucky. The town is nice, but the roads or should I say road, is a 24 hour parking lot known as Rt 20. The developers ran amuk in this nice town and Forsythe Beaucrats just let them build, cash in, and run without providing any additional roadways or ramp entranceways to developments like you find in Gwinnett North.
Now with Dahlonega, you will have to travel a little to get your store items and selection. mostly down the 400 etc. to Dawsonville or over to Gainesville.
Housing cost in the area for a nice place will be in excess of 275K considering you receive land with your properties.
Good Luck,

Thanks so much for you reply. We don't mind being a little remote as we know from experience here in North Florida we won't be remote long. lol. Developers have bought out the commissioners where we live as well. No one here listens to what the people want. They just worry about the money. It's a real shame.

Dahlonega is a very touristy little town (smaller than some think) but it's nice overall. I know someone in the arts industry there, and there are a lot of artists and craftspeople in the area. So for a small southern town it's "fairly liberal" but keep in mind it IS still a small town in the South, so compared to other places it might still be considered rather conservative.
Depends on what you consider progressive. Pretty decent in the arts category but let two women try to marry each other and someone would still most likely burn their house down.

Dahlonega, GA
In response to AtlantaGreg's post and quote "Pretty decent in the arts category but let two women try to marry each other and someone would still most likely burn their house down". I am not sure that two women marrying would be allowed anywhere in the USA. Last I checked was California and maybe Mass.
There are many committed gay couples in the Dahlonega area that have been together for many years. Longer than many local heterosexual couples.
Dahlonega is getting much more decent in the arts category and more progressive in many ways. I think the close proximity to Atlanta and the north suburbs certainly helps. Beautiful country and easy access to Atlanta.

Actually it's been legal for two women to marry in Massachusetts for more than two years now. And what with Massachusetts being the place where the war that we call the American Revolution actually began, we do like to think of ourselves as being in the USA, even if the rest of the country might not like to think of us that way.

Does anyone know if the 55+ community was built, or started? What is the name of it? Where can I get info about it? Thanks
