I want nothing more than to be back in the Rockies. I'm miserable, my wife is miserable, everything is miserable.
This is exactly what I was thinking when I read the 1st post. Moving from Atlanta to south Georgia is a huge adjustment. Moving from Colorado could be really rough ( the heat , the humidity, lack of seasons , the flatness of the land etc.. )
He might like North Georgia a lot better ( the mountains ) and the drive to see the relatives is not that bad - plus the South Georgia folks love to visit the mountains !

My DH spent 8 years in Jacksonville when he was in the Navy so the climate is nothing new to him.

It gets pretty damn hot here too. 100's are normal during the summer. This is part of an agreement we made when we got married. I spend 20 years freezing my little southern belle butt off up here and then we move back to the south. I've got 2 1/2 years left. By then, our youngest daughter will be out of school and starting her Navy career.

Don't get me wrong, I love the mountains but I love home more. We can always come back here for vacations.

Well, he introduced me to the Rockies, it's time for him to meet the Blue Ridge.

There will be a feed and seed store there for sure. When I lived in that area (Baxley) I always grew tomatoes ,peanuts, potatoes, corn, peas, butterbeans. Muscadine grapes grow great there and are delicious. I think you will find the friendlist people in the world in South Georgia.
That's pretty much what I grow here along with squash, cucumbers, melons, peppers and green beans.

You sound like the chamber of commerce!

I was born and raised in the south. The people are one of the main reasons I want to come back. Everybody here is kinda standoffish, most of the women in my age group just think I should stay in the kitchen or putter around the house. That's not me. I can run a farm just as good as any man and that's what I intend to do.

Besides, I won't need a translator anymore , they don't speak southern around here.

Uhh you're kidding yourself if you think Jacksonville is anything like Blackshear. I made the mistake of living in Ware County (which is right next to Pierce County) and it was the worst mistake of my life. If you enjoy any activities other than riding around on a dirt road, walking around barefoot, drinking, watching the grass grow, or high school football you're in for an unpleasant surprise.

I knew people who lived there their whole lives and loved it, so to each their own but personally if anyone ever suggested I move back to south Georgia I'd punch them in the face. The only somewhat bright spot in that miserable region was Camden County and that was only because it was close the beach and Jax was only 20-25 minutes away.

I'm no stranger to rural life. We live way out of town on a 250 acre ranch and our closest neighbor is about a mile away.

My sister, her husband, my husband and another sister will also be there. I like quiet, so does my DH. We've raised our kids, traveled, lived all over the US and Europe, now just watching the grass grow sounds pretty good.

It's pretty (for SE GA) around Blackshear. Looked a little greener, more prosperous, and less trashy than much of the region. It's not what most people might imagine when they think of rural, though. But if you want to be closer to J'ville, then it might be okay.

If you wonder what my definition of trashy is: think vinyl siding, mobile homes, cheap cookie-cutter housing, dumpsters over-flowing, Dollar General stores, too much generic urban sprawl surrounding formerly nice small towns, and a general lack of planning and land stewardship by the local inhabitants. It's what ignorance, greed, conservative politics, and lack of education will buy you if no one's looking. Gotta love "the country" these days. That's what much of Georgia has become.

I live in Pierce County, just outside of Blackshear. I do not suggest it for anyone. I hope to leave south Ga period one day! There is a lot of racial disharmony and just look at the crime rates. I live in the country and we have even been robbed. There are a lot of drugs and not a lot of enforcement going on. Waycross just next door is just as bad. I am from Waycross and still work there. We are in the bible belt, also, so a lot of judgements go on as well.
