Augusta might be inching closer & closer to atlanta's 2nd airport.
Augusta Regional Airport announced Thursday that U.S. Airways Express is adding two daily jet flights from Augusta to Charlotte, N.C., according to an airport news release. The change will upgrade two turbo-prop aircraft to 50 passenger regional jets, the release stated. The change is partly because of a positive public response to U.S. Airways' low fare initiative that began in November 2006. Service to Charlotte will begin Dec. 3. Mayor Deke was off to atlanta this week Augusta mayor Deke Copenhaver was in Atlanta today to meet with Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin and developer Jim Jacoby. Jacoby is one of those interested in a possible downtown ballpark in Augusta, and surrounding development. The mayor wants to look at some of his work in Atlanta. Mayor Copenhaver and Mayor Franklin said that during their meeting, one of the main topics was about ways to fight airport delays. I took a flight from augusta regional airport recently. Right now it is a mess because so much construction is going on, but when its done it will make augusta look like a major city. |

Augusta is falling apart at the seams...car lots and tattoo studios take up much of Gordon Hwy...there are more trailer parks here than Apartment complexes...there are more high school dropouts now than in recent years...no jobs are being made available to those who are qualified...call centers are crap employment...SITEL anyone? Who wants mediocre work like that? Move to Harlem or Dearing and become a garbage man if you want to make more than 8 bucks an hour...all these rundown hotels and floundering businesses in Augusta are starting to detract from what used to be a beautiful city. Garden City my foot...why talk about turning Ellis St downtown into a canal like in Houston? Do something original that will draw in business owners and new residents...If I could afford to move I would...but the price of a gallon of gas is keeping me stuck like chuck...my kids deserve better than Augusta has to offer

Are you referring to the river through downtown San Antonio rather than Houston?

The city of atlanta got a 900,000 dolla to do a study about hartsfield problems. Obviously b-ham isnt the 2nd airport. There would be no reason to do a study to figure out ways to help atlanta. Atlanta is the only major city without 2 airports.
Why does augusta still have the largest metro outside of atlanta. Why does richmond county have more ppl than any other county outside metro atlanta in georgia. You would think macon, columbus, or savannah would pass augusta then. But theyre not just ride down I-20 through augusta, it reminds me of charlotte with all the construction going on. |

Think about it... why in the world would people in Atlanta drive almost 3 hours to use a airport in Augusta when airports in Birmingham, AL, Macon, and Chattanooga are closer? The Augusta airport doesn't even have Jet service..You have to fly in and out of that airport on turbo props and it's served by only 2 airlines US Air Express and ASA with no direct flights to major cities other than Atlanta and Charlotte. If a second airport is to be built to serve the metro Atlanta market it would most likely be built on the northside of the metro area... where much of Georgia's growth is centered... not way out almost 3 hours to the east of Atlanta... that's just plain absurd. I know Augusta is trying to drum up new business for its fledgling airport.. since it is investing so much money in a new terminal.. that's good considering the Augusta airport was truly an eyesore and an embarassment to the city. I have seen nicer airports in backwater cities in third world countries! But these improvements are mainly cosmetic.. and the Augusta market has shown it will not support increased air service. Delta's ASA has consistently cut service in Augusta because of sluggish booking.. and Continental Express pulled out of Augusta after only one year at the aiport due to dismal ticket sales.. this was after the city lauched a massive PR campaign to lure them to the city... Continental came.. but nobody was buying tickets.. despite Continental was offering direct flights to New York. I was on one flight from Augusta to New York on Continental and there were 5 people on the plane (and the tickets were pretty reasonably priced).. I knew that service wasn't going to last long... and it didn't. I am glad to hear that Augusta finally has what appears to be a competent and progressive mayor.. but he is swimming against a big tide in that town.. and as the city charter is written, the mayor has really no authority at all.
Also your comment on Richmond County having the largest population outside the metro Atlanta area is incorrect. OUtside metro Atlanta, Chatham county has the largest population at around 230,000. Richmond COunty is around 195,000. Richmond County is also losing population.. it has been for the last 7 years.. and as these trends continue.. Columbus-Muscogee is expected to overtake Augusta as the second largest city in Georgia by the 2010 census. |

Just checked the lastest census figures at census.gov
Chatham County has 241,000 people as of 2006 and it's population has grown by about 4% since 2000. Richmond County has around 194,000 people as of 2006.. it's population has had a net decline of about 3% since 2000. MUscogee County (Columbus) has a pop around 189,000 as of 2006 and its pop has seens a net increase of close to 2% since 2000.. as you can see from the figures of these three cities.. Augusta is the only one losing population.. and these trends continue.. Columbus will easily overtake Augusta's position as Georgia's second largest city.. and all Savannah needs to do is consolidate or annex enough from Chatham County to comfortably be positioned as Georgia's second largest city.. YOu can say all you want that Augusta is a growing city... but the facts and figures show the opposite. It's economy is one of the most sluggish in the state with nearly 0% growth. It has one of the highest unemployment rates of any metro area in Georgia. The city also has one of the least educated workforces of any metro area in Georgia. |

Richmond county population as of 2007 was over 208,000 ppl. Without adding hephzibah, blythe, & mcbean all in south augusta population to augusta. Then there is the new condos, whites building, and new houses in south augusta and west augusta, & east augusta being built.
