Monroe County is great. Mary Persons is ranked really well in the state #57 in the state and has numerous AP courses and LOTS of sports. It has 97.5 % achievement and 67% or more students exceed standards! TG Scott Elementary has 96% achievement scores and #146 in the state. Banks Stephens Middle #58 in the state (where I used to teach before being a stay at home mom) is wonderful as well and many middle schools in the state cannot say that for sure!

They are building a new high school soon and as far as subdivisions I really like Adamsville Park (200's to high 300's). Someone told me they are getting a Buffalo's restaurant. And the Superwalmart will go right behind where the current one is at once it gets through all the political red tape. They have the new CVS and newer Ingles. I am sure you start to see more and more with the dept heads from Atlanta coming.
The Rec Dept is good if you have kids in sports.

My husband commutes to the airport and Buckhead on occassion and he says that if you can have flex time and adjust your time then getting into Buckhead is fine if you leave around 8:30/8:45 (takes 1 hr exactly the other day). I know commuting is hard BUT my brother lives in Acworth (the other place we are considering) and he can sit in traffic for almost 2 hrs some days just from Smyrna to Acworth!!! So I hate to say it but after MUCH research and realizations that middle ga doesn't have those jobs we need (IT) commuting is what we have to do and there is really no good way to get to Atlanta unless you live right on top almost of where you work (sad but true).

I like Atlanta and (Macon believe or not) and with all the shopping and restaurants in north Macon and yet hardly any trafffic especially in Monroe County it seems like a good spot. Also, small town feel and friendly people.

Atlanta and metro Atlanta makes me more nervouse since it is still growing not many people are leaving and it will just get more crowded which means more schools being redistricted and overcrowding. Not too mention just extra activities for kids getting filled more quickly such as rec dept sports.

Henry county is good but the schools are WAY overcrowded. I mean 1300 to 1400 kids in elementary schools!! That means lots of trailers. Also, people on this board warned me of the fact of Clayton county losing its accredidation.

I wish there was a great answer but we have looked at PTC (way too expensive with taxes too), Alpharetta (seems also pricey with Fulton taxes), East Cobb (older and VERY expensive and you don't get much for the money, Gwinnett (didn't want to live there because of schools) and no in town areas seem good as far as schools for what we wanted.
Acworth, Kennesaw, Powder Springs and Cherokee County all were very nice but again if you work near downtown it does not seem any better than the Monroe County commute.

***The only benefit I see is if you move to Atlanta or surrounding then you have a better chance of finding another job. Meaning if you choose to live in Kennesaw then you could find a job in Kennesaw and therefore no more commute. But since family is a concern that would not be an option.

We have been on the fence a while now as to what to do and it's very hard if you factor all the things in but now that I know the van service will be coming then that also helps things too for ALL the commuters from Forsyth (there are LOTS). They also commute alot to Warner Robins as well.

I hope this has helped some.

Bob,

I'm sorry for not supplying enough information. The job prospect is in Griffin and I want to live somewhere between there and Macon. What do you think?

I also heard there is a new subdivision off Bunn Road (not sure the name) and one on Rumble Road called Greenview Estates in the 200's on large lots. Also, Deer Creek Manor off Jenkins Road which is off Rumble Road if you want to build. Then off 41 there is Essex Place.

Default Re: relocation to Monroe Co.

While I'm looking for housing in the Forsyth area I expect to be working in Griffin and surrounding location. I'm also open to suggestions about the city of Macon, and what area would be good for me considering the commute to Griffin?

If you are looking at Macon I would look at north Macon....Bass Road, Wesleyan areas or Northwest Macon such as Zebulon Road area. Those will be better for your commute and nice places to live as well.

Thanks Trish... I appreciate the tip. How is the housing situation? Where I'm coming from (CA) the bottoml has just about fallen out; my house has dropped in value approximately $130,000 in less than a year. Nonetheless, I still want to relocate for the slower pace. I need to stay under $375,000 for housing.

Well if you look in Monroe County for example in Adamsville Park off Montpelier Road you can get a 2 story 5 bedroom 3 bath on a basement on a 1 acre sodded front and back yard for 365K ina sidewalk, swim, tennis, volleyball, picnic area subdivision brand new in a wonderful school district. In general, there are more building lots because people TEND (not all) to buy land and build there in Monroe County.

In Northwest Macon off Zebulon Road you can get brand new 4 or 5 bedroom on a golf course in Barrington Hall Golf for about 380K.

Of course these are not even the resales just wanted to give you some examples.

We are trying to find something in Monroe County currently and with the market it has been tough since alot of builders seem to have been holding off on new construction... spec homes that is.

My suggestion would be stick with those developing in Monroe county and not building....In other words, find the lot first...you`ll get alot better deal....and then find a quality builder to build within your price range. When you deal with a developer/builder, they have deeper pockets and have a tendancy to hold firm to their prices.

The Bunn Rd. development I believe is Moon Family properties.....probably lower end homes...
