Cherokee looks nice! A large part of our retirement is based on income via the internet. Our problem with those parts of Ga, as well as western NC is the lack of high speed CABLE internet. It's not available in most places and in the places that we have found it it's so sub standard we decided not to move there.
We are definitely not counting on social security and have developed a couple of internet based business that at present are for fun and giggles but when I sell my customer base and business they will be a good size part of our retirement income. Gotta have proper technology .
But it does look nice up there.

You should look up Morgan County! I have lived here for 8 years and grew up in nearby Newton County. My husband and I love it here! There is a new community in Madison called 'Madison Lakes' and there is a 'section' especially for active adults. I know that there is an equestrian facility and a 18-hole golf course in the community also! Nice homes in a great area!

Stay away from Monroe, Winder as the crime is getting bad there. Social Circle is nice but consider Hall county or Rabun Co. These are very nice low crime areas. I have lived all over and traveled all over Ga. My opinions are informed.

I'm new at this, so please forgive me if i'm posting wrong. My family is planing on moving to Duluth, can anyone inform me as to how close are the shopping centers, and hospitals, I need to know this because my mother is moving with us, and she will be in need of medical care. We are planning to vistit duluth in the latter part of November, and we will also be interested in Lawrenceville. Thank you for any responses.

Duluth is close to anything you need and is very nice, low crime. Lawrenceville is crowded and beginning to see more crime than ever.

Lawrenceville is not so bad.Yes, there are issues around the 124, but downtown is going through a major restoration, with restaurants, etc.
Also, Lawrenceville spans over a large area of Gwinnett, plus being the County seat.
Lawrenceville borders Dacula, Suwanne, and the Mall of Ga Buford, Duluth, and Grayson.

Yes but you can restore the buildings but you can't restore the people who seem to be creeping into Lawrenceville. Gwinnet is seeing "white flight" as did Dekalb about 20 years ago.

You'll love North Georgia!
I live in North Georgia in the Hall County area and love it. I have actually worked in a golf course community with folks like you for over 10 years. This area is friendly and easy to get connected to. You may want to check it out as well. There are many golf courses, Lake Lanier and the convenience of heading towards the mountains or metro Atlanta.
Jackson and Barrow Counties are right next to us. Jackson is a little slower growing than Barrow and is a little more rural. Barrow has been booming with the addition of Hamilton Mill and Chateau Elan.
I don't know a whole lot about Cherokee County because it's about 45 minutes from me. My niece lives in Cherokee County and it seems to be a very nice place as well.
Our weather is pretty good most of the time. January is usually awful, but we wear shorts in February so one can survive two yukky months. August is usually so hot we have to stay inside, but thank heaven for air conditioning.
Hope this helps some. Good luck on your search!

We're looking at the active adult communities because we've learned from experience when you move to a new area where you don't know a single person it can be difficult to meet people with similar interests and the time needed to pursue those interests (i.e. golfing). We'd like to be with people more in our age group rather than younger, working couples with little ones.
We're also considering some communities in central Florida but think it will be a lot more expensive because of insurance and property tax.
We're originally from the Midwest but now in coastal Mississippi (thankfully spared by Katrina) and want to stay in a warmer climate where we can golf and have the fun retirement we've saved and looked forward to for many years. Thanks for your comments!

Hi Mr. Tudo,
I live in Cherokee Co., Ga. (15 yrs.) and I've had Comcast hi-speed broadband for at least the past 5 years. I make my living with it also.
Cherokee is beautiful and there are lots of new communities with the kind of amenities you have mentioned. You will have to stay out of the mountains for cell phone reception and broadband but that's farther north than Cherokee.
