I worked from home for years as a sales rep; that usually involves some travel, of course, but it can be lucrative.

I work from home many days. It's not that my job is designated as one to be done from home, it's that it doesn't matter, and my company understands that I can be productive from my home office in the same way as I can be from the company office, without wasting time and gas or stressing myself. Many companies today are moving in this direction.

I use modern unified communications technology (VoIP, video conferencing, Live Meeting, e-mail/unified messaging) to bridge any gap.

I work from home, too, roughly 3-4 days a week. I like going into the office, some so that it breaks up the monotony. I like it overall, but it took me a while to get into a position that would allow it. I do know that some people at my company frown on it and think the person is goofing off, but I think some of that could be jealousy issues. I know working from home is not for everyone, those who do it should be trusted. People can just as easily goof off at the office, too.

There are ways to get there if someone doesn't know, just research it online. I think the eBay idea is good, or doing other types of consignment if you have the eye for things that you know sell. Being computer savvy helps, too.

Default Business without start up cost

Karla Britt,
I can understand the want to work from home. I have a wife and two kids who i love dearly and want to be home with. I found a company that I work at home with now. It doesnt have a start up cost and actually will help you learn how you can get products that you use in your home everyday and save money.
This has helped me stay home, get extra money so my wife doesnt have to work, pay the bill and pay for my car. Sounds crazy but it is true. I have money and earn money and i love it! Email me if you would like to know more.
Blake

I hear the Ebay thing can be good but only if you "buy-low" and sell no higher than average can you make money. For example, my wife was trying to find a Vera Bradley (VB) outlet. So I looked online and discovered there are none except their headquarters sale first week in October each year. There you could buy up to $2500 per person of VB products. The example I read about talked about $55 bags selling for $10 by the end of the sale week.

Then, you would go to Ebay and setup a store (I would setup my own website instead of an Ebay store) and sell some via Ebay auction. You could sell for 3 or 4 times what you paid.

Unfortunately, I see several wrinkles in that plan. The fees that Ebay charge to list items would eat into your profits. And, with that many products, you likely would need computer help as well to automate the process. Of course the upfront cost of buying the products to sell is another hurdle.

Good Luck to you.

OP, be careful! You say you want to work from home...then all of these noobs come out of the woodwork, wanting to pitch you ideas. BE CAREFUL!

May I ask why you HAVE to work from home, and cannot go to a place of employment like the vast majority of us do? What skills do you possess that make you so special that you can work from home?

This is an old thread from 2007 and someone probably found while on City-Data and responded to it. The original poster probably isn't active any more.

I think working from home works out for the most part if you have been working at an office for some firm and then in time they allow it if your job is computer-centric, meaning pretty much all you do is by computer of by phone. The work from home deals only work for some people, the scams where they take your money upfront should be avoided.

I see the comment about eBay, yea, I don't think eBay is as lucrative for many as it was years earlier. Buying trends change, but I know of people who sell specialized items after going to yard sales and so on. I recommend doing that if you have a knack for specialized selling say, toys, and/or various collectibles which do not cost a lot to send thru the mail.
