As far as being included with Savannah's Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), I completely agree with Newsboy in the fact that so much of their population commutes to Savannah for jobs... and not just jobs for that matter. Those people also shop in Savannah and vice versa. Beaufort and Jasper counties are a big part of the Savannah area and should be included. Probably just as much as Hinesville's micropolitan area is.

Apparently thats not true or else it would be included, is it even included in Savannah's CSA? (which has much less stricter requirements)

Exactly! These stats were not meant to start some sort of pissing contest. And I dont even know why downtowns were brought up in the first place.

Hey newsboy he must have really hit a nerve by posting them statistics, I mean really is it that serious. No one ever said Augusta downtown was better than Savannah's and for the record if anyone have visited both cities lately you would know Augusta has developed more than Savannah over the last few years.

LOL..I think GA has an interesting rivalry between the 2nd tier cities....

Honestly...Augusta has the bigger metro, Savannah does have the better downtown and it's more urban.
Columbus suddenly seems like it has the most potential with BRAC.

Why are these three cities constantly attacking each other? I like all of them and each has positives and negatives.

The numbers for Columbus will be much larger now. This data is 5 years old, well before BRAC. There have been a lot of new developments open up since then. Keep in mind there are 25,000 more people in the area as well all spending money in restaurants, hotels, retail establishments, etc. Benning Technology Park alone is anticipated to create 5,000 new jobs. These are companies that will be doing work with Fort Benning.

I don't know why other people won't acknowledge this.... The average person from either Beaufort or Hilton-Head won't tell you they live in Savannah or even metro Savannah.... Now go ask the residents of North Augusta and Aiken in South Carolina where they live... They'll tell you 'Augusta', and definitely metro Augusta/Augusta area......

Nobody from Augusta won't deny how downtown Savannah is further along, or Fort Benning in Columbus is much larger than Fort Gordon... None of the other malls in the 2nd tier cities are in the same league with the Augusta mall(Apple, Pandora, Sephora, Williams Sonoma, PF Changs, Chop House, etc).... The residents of Columbia drive to the Augusta mall due to Apple, PF Changs, etc... The Village at Riverwatch in West Augusta won't have any competition from the other 2nd tier cities anytime soon... This isn't even mentioning the exisiting Augusta Exchange, Surrey Center, or the future Wheeler Town Park...

The top three 2nd tier cities (Augusta, Columbus, Savannah) have no direct interstate connection to each other. Both Augusta and Columbus share the same area code which is soo wrong. Augusta and Savannah share the Savannah River, the Augusta area often goes by the name CSRA meaning Central Savannah River Area. Augusta and Savannah where the first two cities of the state. But all of the cities have something to be proud of.

Savannah can thank it's founders for the urban design of there downtown. But Augusta has it's own version of I-285, so Savannah and Augusta are equally urban imo.

Augusta and Columbus are rivals only in population. Take population off the table and Augusta blows the great city of Columbus out the water. But well will see what the new numbers soon because this is pre-BRAC.

Why are we grouping Columbus with Augusta and Savannah when the stats in the OP clearly display Augusta and Savannah are on another level? (2nd Tier Augusta, Savannah) (3rd Tier Columbus, Macon) (4th Tier Athens, Valdosta, Albany, Warner Robins, Gainesville, Brunswick)

What's to acknowledge? Nobody denies that as defined now, Augusta has a larger metro populaton than Savannah. But when you count all the people who live on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River, the Savannah REGION does indeed have a larger population than Augusta -- AND THAT'S FACT! It's not Savannah's fault that the communities in South Carolina opposite us have stronger identities than Aiken; but it doesn't take away from the fact that AS THE CROW FLIES more people live within a 30 mile radius of Savannah than do Augusta!

Our TV stations market themselves as "Savannah-Hilton Head" and have studios in BOTH places. The local international airport (which flies circles around Augusta's Bush Field BTW) is Savannah-HILTON HEAD International. All of the top medical providers in the region (specialists, trauma center, etc) are based IN SAVANNAH. In reverse, the biggest concentration of AUTO DEALERS in the Savannah area is in ... JASPER COUNTY, SC! If you live in Savannah and want to buy a new car (especially a luxury model) you're most likely going to drive 20 minutes over to Hardeeville to do it.

People who live on Hilton Head come to Savannah to do serious shopping, because they don't have any department stores to speak of (Dillard's, Macy's, Sears, JCPenny, etc. are all in Savannah). The mall on HHI is completelty empty and about to be bulldozed. In reverse, folks in Savannah think nothing of driving over to Bluffton to visit the abundant outlet malls. See how that works?

Many, many people do drive back and forth between here and there to work, shop, eat, play, etc. -- AND THE TRAFFIC EXISTS TO PROVE IT!

It's only a matter of time until the Office of Management and Budget recognizes the Savannah-Hinesville-Hilton Head CSA as the true region it is, with a current population of around 630,000 and growing ... growing VERY quickly I might add! According to the latest Census estimates, Chatham County has grown by MORE THAN 6,000 PEOPLE just since 2010! Richmond has added fewer than 1,000.

Also, If somebody has crime stats that show Augusta is safer than Savannah I'd like to see them. The most recent figures I have found (from 2010) show the exact opposite.

Its more than the population Newsboy. How does Augusta have more art establishments and revenue than Savannah the home of SCAD? How does Augusta have more shopping options than Savannah hands down when Savannah has the international airport, sea port, a historic downtown and beaches & islands? Savannah is well known for it's deadlocked gangster culture and way too violent for a city it's size.
