My question is not to offend any one, but to inform my self on the issue to help me decide were to move after fighting for my country. Is the Good’Ole south gone? Is there still places in the south were the towns are “down home” towns, were I can raise my son to be a southern Gentlemen, to speak and be polite to every one, to respect his elders and understand that hard work, a firm hand shake, and your word goes a long way, to say yes mam and no mam, yes sir and no sir. Are there towns that still do things the right way, towns who are not scared to death, that if they lock some one up for committing a crime the media is going to be knocking down town halls doors calling justice and punishment, racism and hate! Imagine that, if you commit a crime, you pay for it, wow! So my question is this does the Good’Ole south still exist and if so were are some good cities left in the south. Thanks
P.S. please dont erase this one I dont complain about the hillbilly and redneck comments on every other southern state thread, Thanks

the fact remains that the south has been fighting our wars for some time.
that is where we find the people with the guts willing to serve. been like that for a long time.

move to Texas..........plus if you are retiring from the military, they dont tax your retirement. and no state income tax here. very military friendly. lots of VA's and MTF's here to serve your medical needs. folks are alot friendlier here than Georgia. (i spent 3 years at Ft Stewart from '03 to'06). HOOAH! stay safe out there in the sandbox!

Saying that people in the South disproportionately serve in the military because they are more patriotic is either misinformed or disengenuos. The South was slow to industrialize... and the region did not put as a high a value on education. Poverty rates tend to also be higher in the South then any other region. For these reasons military service is seen as a ticket to success.. providing skills training and often money for education. It is also no secret that the military aggressively recruits in the poorest areas.. and not so much in affluent areas.. its an easier sell in the poor areas with no good jobs where many don't go on to college. If we want to look at barometers of patriotism then it should be interesting to note that The South has the smallest ratio of households that fly the US Flag.

The south, for the most part are very proud of there country and history, and that is why most the soldiers in my unit serve, 9/11 happened in New York and over half the soldiers E-5 and below serving from the south say that the reason they signed up was because of 9/11, if that horrible thing would have happened in the south, I can only Imagine!?! I have a degree in political science, but I guess being from Ga, I must be uneducated? I also did not grow up poor, or in a "poor area" I went and fond a recruiter, because I wanted to serve my country, not drain it!! I wish you would say what you just typed, to the thousands of army and marine soldiers here in Iraq, who fight, and watch friends and brothers die! Tell them they are here fighting because they are uneducated and poor, and this there "ticket to success"! Ticket to success, lol, you my friend don’t know ****

If you really prefer to return to GA, then I would suggest checking into some of the smaller communities in Southeast GA. Based on my travels through that area, it seems to be the closest fit in this state to what you are looking for. In particular, you may want to research places like Baxley, Hazlehurst, Alma, Eastman, Lumber City, and Vidalia. From my experience, these towns still have an old-fashioned southern feel to them where the people will address you with "ma'am" or "sir". In fact, a few years ago, the Dairy Queen in Baxley had a "No Cursing" sign in the dining area. I had never seen anything like that before. Of course, these places may not be compatible, based on your career choice. Like deja-zebbie posted, it would be best to do your research, but I just wanted to pass on a few specific names to help narrow your search.

Thank you very much, I was wondering how long it would take for some one to come in, and give some real advice and not complain about what my choice of a good place to live is! I will look into those places, im sure they are close to what im looking for, I was considering Waycross area, maybe Sunnyside. If any one has any more advice it would be great! Thanks again

You know, I've gotta be honest, one part of your question was simple. The other part of your question was definitely not simple, in fact it was very complex.
So if you're wondering if the manners and 'honor' of the old south is still around, yes, it is. I know people of all ages in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee who still those qualities you're asking about. I'm sure other the other southern states do, as well. Smaller towns, of course, are going to be more southern.
The second part of your question, involving race, is tricky because it doesn't refer to a specific event. As it is, when you ask about the "Old Way," and start talking about race and the media, you're leaving an awful lot up for interpretation. I mean, a small town can't control what the media decides to do.
Since you asked about the south as a whole, I grew up in South Carolina, and can suggest some towns there - Camden, Manning, Bamberg, Moncks Corner are all very southern towns that sound like what you're looking for. Good luck.
