I commend this young man for speaking out against this proposed new interstate and totally agree with his views. Maybe one day he will run
for a political office, Senator or Congressman......wouldn't that be refreshing!!!!!
Only Augusta wants this unnecessary interstate... they think it will somehow jumpstart their economy... but of course building another interstate will just make it easier to get the heck out.
Does anyone have a list of what towns this proposed intertstate will cross through? If it goes anywhere near the Atlanta suburbs, at least it could help relieve the traffic congestion.

Unless it goes from those suburbs into Atlanta proper, it'll do nothing to relieve traffic congestion. The cause of that congestion is all of the people who live in the burbs and work in the city. Adding another interstate that doesn't get you to the city is worthless in resolving the traffic situation. Not to mention, the proposed route doesn't get anywhere near Atlanta (or any of it's commuting suburbs) anyway.
Yes, I have to agree that when I heard the argument about relieving Atlanta's traffic congestion I found it hard to swallow. The claim is that I-3 would allow trucks and other traffic to bypass Atlanta. Seems doubtful...
My guess? I think it's about moving nuclear materials along a relatively unpopulated corridor. I have read that a number of senators and congressmen are very concerned about how these materials are currently moved via railroads routed through major cities. If this is indeed all about nuclear materials, I wish you well but you're going to have a very difficult time fighting this project. You might have better luck requesting certain route changes.
The young man in the You-tube link was indeed eloquent. His strongest argument (IMO) was the economic one. Technically, the money could not be used for humanitarian aid, as he suggested, but it is a good point that money is needed for repairs to bridges and numerous other infratstructure repairs before building a new interstate.
There just isn't a strong case for this interstate and it will do little to alleviate Atlanta traffic congestion. If these politicians really wanted to help people in the impoverished "black belt" they would put more money in education and job training, not asphalt.
The goverment needs to finish high traffic interstate routes first before they start building new ones in the middle of nowhere. Did you know that I95 has yet to be completed? This is nothing but another pork barrel spending project from politicians who want to be able to say they brought federal money back into their districts. The leading proponent of this interstate, former Congressman Max Burns, is no longer in Congress anyway. So who is pushing for this interstate now? I don't think there is much prospect for I14 ever being built. The growth and traffic congestion is centered around metro Atlanta.. one would think that area would be the priority for new freeway construction.. not places like Augusta, GA and Natchez, MS.
Well, it would be nice to have a quicker route for me anyway, between Greenville, Augusta, and Savannah. But I have always enjoyed the back-country trips ...so this freeway is, in-reality, rather pointless. I think the main reason for this interstate would be hurricane evacuation, and moving military equipment between Ft. Gordon in Augusta to the ports, or vise versa. (Remember that our Interstates are actually more for defensive purposes, and a way to travel is secondary).
actually the proposed I3 route wouldn't do much for you in Greenville.. since the proposed route is far west of there. An alternate proposal has been to build a north south interstate just south of Greenville from I26 then over towards Augusta intersecting with I20 and then onto Savannah... apparantly the route between Augusta and Savannah is already there (Called The Savannah River Pkwy)...it would just have to be upgraded to interstate standards...(its currently a divided four lane highway with no interchanges). This alternate route would avoid going through the sensitive mountain areas in north Georgia and The smokies.. it would utilise more existing infrastructure and would be quicker to build at a substantially lower cost. I think this proposal is also the one favored by Rep Paul Broun who replaced the late Charlie Norwood in Congress.

The Savannah River Pkwy was a ruse to 4 lane State routes connecting towns bypassed by the interstates and bring prosperity to all. The Savannah River Pkwy is a series of routes zigzaging across the region not a straight line. But dear old Max also planned for a 'Max Burns Parkway' to be the I-3 route through 'F-ing-ham County to I-95 through my back yard, but there is no interchange space left on I-95. so GDOT is to terminate the 6-lane truck route onto residential streets (Benton Blvd and Highlands Ave) to get to I-95 at Jimmy Deloach Parkway
The new roads to be built are now the Rincon Bypass and the 'F-ing-ham Parkway. (RIP Max) Traffic into Savannah is so much worse than in Atlanta, it takes a whole hour to go 45 miles to work. Commuters in metro Atlanta just can't possibily understand how bad traffic is in Rincon. Something has to be done about that 15 minute back upon GA 21 each morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We can't wast anymore $ building unnecessary roads in Atlanta when Rincon is suffering
We must first alleviate Rincon's traffic congestion.

Hmmm...ASHTO must be running out of numbers. I-3 doesn't fit the highway grid in terms of numerical designation. North south interstates increase in value from west to the east. Therefore I-5 runs along the west coast and I 95 runs along the east coast. I-3 out east in Georgia doesn't make sense in terms of it's numerical designation in a state where you have I-75, I-85, and I-95.
