Helen is the same as it always has been. The town will always be the German atmosphere. While there are stores that still have German products there are many that are just tourist stores that have all kinds of different things to see and buy.Still a great town and it stays fairly busy when there are events going on.

Helen resident
Still looking for info on Helen, GA.? I'm a 30-year resident whose husband was an actual Helen native.
Still an Alpine-themed town, with some good German or Tyrolean merchants, but has in last few years leaned more to tourist junk trade. Octoberfest is still the biggest event, and continues to draw folks from far and wide. Tubing on the Chattahoochee River is great family fun, and clogs the river even on overcast summer days. Major proliferation of condos along the river, but environmental groups and State watch this very closely. Wide range of dining fare, from just awful to five star.
Hope this helps. Post again if more specific info requested.

I was in Helen a couple of years ago on vacation. It was really nice. It's like a small road of stores, but the difference is it wasn't expensive. It does get really crowded on the road on the weekends, but just park and ride. All the houses and buildinglook like the keebler elves are living there. We walked up down the main road and found alot to do.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Helen! You gotta go! As PP stated, there are alot of just touristy shops but the FOOD! You have to try the spaetzle if you haven't already. One of the german diners has it w/cream and black forest ham bites. Oh drooling! I liked what JohnandCheryl said "keebler elves" Perfect. It's a busy beautiful area still.
