In the past they had been sending some mail notifying me of my coming expiration then I'd renew it through the mail. I guess they're ending that service now?

Its not realy new, they started it July 1 2012, (Last Year).

1st time thru on your (new) renewal, you have to bring doc Renewal of Driver's License or Identification Card that shows who you are, and you are legal in the US. You get a paper licence, in 7-10 days your plastic one arrives.

Just make sure your have the original of the documents required, or you will be making a 2nd trip there.

According to this once you go through these newer procedures you can go back to getting it renewed through the mail. Which means they should be sending out renewal notification in the mail before your expiration.

I did last year and what a PITA. Good thing I had a certified copy of my birth certificate among other documents needed. What really made me mad is I turned 62 and I could only renew for the lower end they told me I was too old to renew for the longest timeframe.

I renewed mine last month. This time around I got my Veterans license. I'm 76 and its good for five years. Probably won't be getting them renewed many more times. I took my passport, some copies of my electric bills and I didn't have any trouble. Took about 20 minutes.
