Chattanooga TN has an awesome downtown. If Augusta was able to a maintain a decent downtown it would on if not pass the level Chattanooga. A large attraction is all Augusta is missing.

Georgia's Mid-Sized to Smaller Cities by GDP rank.Augusta is doing really well.

Chattanooga has one of the best downtowns in the Southeast. No way Augusta or any other Georgia city comes close (outside Atlanta and Savannah). With Whitewater, Columbus stands a better chance but is still years behind Chattanooga.

South Carolina Metro vs. Georgia based on the cities you mentioned.....

2010 numbers

1. Greenville (824,112)

2. Columbia (767, 598)....change of 120,440
Augusta (556,877)....change of 57,193

3.Charleston (664,607)....change of 115,574
Savannah (347,611)...change of 54,611

4. Myrtle Beach, SC (329,449)....change of 132,820
Columbus, GA (294,865)....change of 13,097

ATLANTA is a beast....is light years of SC I agree.....but SC cities are LIGHT years ahead of GA cities take away Atlanta....they are no ones heels.....People moving to GEORGIA do not look at the other GA cities are GREAT options...Atlanta seems like the only logical choice......where as South Carolina they are ALL logical choices....sorry...heck I didn't even include the Charlotte metro that extends into South Carolina because its mostly charlotte but does include over 300,000 South Carolinians in that metro which is an option to live with those amenities

While I agree the SC metro's are outpacing the second tiers metro's of Georgia now, saying light years ahead is overstepping it. Without the existence of Atlanta one can easily argue the whole of Atlanta would be spread to the other cities and logically Macon because of it's central location would rival Columbia. Plus over the next decade you will start to see a change in the growth of the second tier cities of Georgia especially Savannah with it's expanding port and Augusta will the grow of the cybernetic industry with Fort Gordon, the healthcare industry with GRU and energy from Plant Vogtle. Our state is expected to have over 16 million people by 2030, do you honestly think all those folks will move to Atlanta?

Yes....most of those people will move to the Atlanta Metro.....I was exaggerating saying SCs cities are light years ahead, but bottom line they are ahead and are growing at a faster pace....while you mentioned good things for growth for those metros in GA outside ATL the South Carolina cities have just as many companies expanding if not faster too....So far as someone to say that ALL (meaning the next major metros)of GA is ahead of SC or AL is really false....

Whatever is good for Carolina is good for the CSRA which includes Augusta Ga. Palmetto Parkway united the 2 State, bringing a sense of community with North Augusta towards Augusta-Richmond. Growth will come along the perimeter of I520 first.
