Augusta is the only 2nd tier metro in the state with a population of 500,000 or more which would put it in a tier alone. Savannah and Columbus would be in the 300,000-500,000 tier Macon would be in the 200,000-300,000 tier. Athens, W.R, and Gainesville could join that soon but until then I would put them in a tier below Macon....and maybe even Albany. Overall, I would say metro Augusta has the best chance to turn into a major metro.
You can't really look at those numbers and take them at face value without considering other factors. i.e. Augusta does have the largest metro of all GA cities outside of Atlanta, but Savannah's figures dont even count the SC side. Just because the SC side is not listed as part of the msa or csa doesnt change the fact that they're right there with Savannah and interact daily. The numbers would be closer if it were included. Macon and WR are really the same area, though listed separately. Savannah has the better, denser, downtown area of all the cities. Augusta has the largest metro area. I put them in the same tier and mark it as a toss up depending on what a person cares about more. The larger metro of Augusta or the better, denser downtown of Savannah. IMO Augusta leads the way in having a change to become a major city but Savannah isn't that far behind.

Augusta-Richmond County, GA-SC MSA 575,898----- Savannah-Hinesville-Statesboro, GA CSA 516,159----- Columbus-Auburn-Opelika, GA-AL CSA 491,852----- Macon-Warner Robins, GA CSA 418,201. Augusta doesn't have a CSA, rightfully so when its MSA takes up more land area than the CSA of the other cities. All in the 400ks or 500ks. Looks like the same 'tier' to me /End.

Comparing the MSA vs the CSA doesn't really provide the true size of each metro.. The amount of land area doesn't mean anything when Aiken County(land area)is one of the largest counties in the US... The shopping in Augusta(Michael Kors, Cabela's, Earthfare, H&M, Apple, Costco, Whole Foods, Pandora, etc)is better than Columbia and on par with Greenville...

The residents living in Hilton Head, Bluffton, and Beaufort don't rely on the economy of Savannah. Hilton Head is one of the most well know resorts in the entire US...

Only 1,608 people drive from Beaufort County to Chatham County daily for work compared to the 10,269 who drive between Aiken County/Richmond County.

Numbers don't lie: No metro with 575k is in the same tier with a metro of 361k. I would really like to see Macon and WR combine though.

A denser downtown would put them in the same tier? So I guess I could put St.Louis in the same tier as Atlanta because it has a denser downtown? No, the metros are going to be determined based on numbers..MSA vs MSA....

Richmond county ALONE has more people that commute in than all of Savannah's metro area. The numbers don't lie. 41,224 workers commute into RICHMOND COUNTY, while only 10,097 come into SAVANNAH'S METRO AREA. The total for Augusta metro is 70,662 workers commuting in. Savannah doesn't seem to be on the same tier now. That's 60,565 worker difference coming into metro areas. Savannah doesn't seem to be on the same tier now does it?

I agree. Besides Athens is a college town. Columbus is a midsize city with big companies.

Columbus has a midsize city population with a small town infrastructure.
