hi i'm looking to relocate to athens ga I'm from Milwaukee Wisconsin. i never been down south or yet alone the state of georgia. I'm wondering can anyone thats familiar with athens or lives in athens can just give me some general information on the town, neighborhoods etc....

Athens is a nice area to live in, and depending upon wht you're looking for, the best area that ppl talk about moving is the Five Points area. Five points is an area where there's some nice local and national stores, and restaurants along with some yoga studios. The other parts of town would be situated in what's called the "eastside" or "westside" of town. The Eastside is comprised of mostly college apts, and rental properties, along with some not so great areas intermingled. The Westside is a more suburban-esque area where you see the typical ranch homes with the yards and such. Other places that people moving into the area usually see outside of Athens; Watkinsville (south), Bogart (just west), Madison (south), and Jefferson (northwest). Also depending on if you're looking at placing kids in school, the better districts in our area would be in Jackson county, Oconee County, and the various private schools.
As far as work, unfortunately there's not a whole lot of professional work in the area, for whatever reason I don't know. Most people commute towards the Atlanta area for the better paying jobs, or even just move there. However in the past several years I think Athens has started gaining some attention and getting a lot of medical industry services in the form of medical office parks and doctors offices being built. Other than the healthcare industry the university is the other main job source in Athens, followed by the so many various stores and low-paying restaurants.
