One in Lumpkin County( Dahlonega) at the intersection of hwy 129 and hwy 19 is Turners Corner Campground. Not sure as to what they offer as far as WIFI and such as we do only tent camping ( and they don't allow tents ) .Their location is beautiful though , right a long a big rushing stream). It would be a good local to check out land/homes in the southern part of Union , northern Lumpkin and the western areas of White County.

You can search for my previous comments concerning the mountains and retirement. Moved up there and as soon as we had 2 years in the house, we sold and moved back home. Thankfully, we kept our house.

My realtor told me he sells "dreams and fantasies". We had a spell of nostalgia and a fantasy and moved. Good news we made money at the top of the market when we sold.

Someone said the area is overbuilt. True. Many of the houses in the YOung Harris and Hiawassee area where we lived are second homes/vacation homes. My realtor told me recently that many owners who want to sell won't come down on their prices because they want their money (who doesn't) and that they don't need the money so they wait. Nothing is selling. There is an occasional bargain. There was a house on Lake Chatuge (foreclosed) that went for around 260k which is unheard of. I suggest if you are determined to move up there that you find an agent to represent you and tell them what you want, what you are willing to pay and have them monitor the MLS for you.

If you direct msg me, I will supply you with my agent who knows the area well. I have nothing to gain on this. Up to you.

Now, why did we leave? Beautiful area. Yes. For us though, we missed our friends, our church and our "support" team such as our primary care doctor, our specialist physicians, trusted plumber, trusted garage, electrician, barber, trusted heat and air guy whom I can call in the middle of the night, bank, dentist and so on. This isn't to say there are not good people in the mountains. There are. We just missed our home. We did have a good doc in Hiawassee. Dentist ok. Shopping very, very limited but Amazon works up there. All we could get internetwise at the time was DSL which was very troublesome.

IF you go that direction, get involved with some clubs if you are not already. Get to know people. It just did not work for us.

The RV idea is a good one. We also have a fifth wheel and have looked at lots up in the area to purchase but ultimately decided to just go up in good weather and enjoy the area and then come home. Same way for the beach.

All I am saying is don't fall for the fantasy and dream. A lot is for sale up there for different reasons. Some of those reasons will include that living there full time is not all it is made out to be.

Good luck.
