Thoughts on Columbus (Atlanta, Savannah, Macon: condos, rent, hotels)

What do you guys think about Columbus and the metro area?

I have been living in Columbus for 27 years, seen it grow into what it
is today(bigger). There is a lot of resturaunts and shopping , seems to be
mostly north Columbus is growing, but there is still alot to be seen in the
south part of town, though the town seems to be divided north/south.
The city is working on the south side with new venues and development,
overall its a decent size town with a small town personalty... for now anyway.

After leaving for 10 years, I returned to a city that's vastly different from when I left. It has a vibrant Downtown, two outstanding universities (Auburn and Columbus State), several Jr. Colleges, children friendly, family oriented, plenty of skilled jobs and some service oriented jobs also. This whole area, from Auburn, AL to the west, La Grange to the north, Lumpkin to the south and Warms Springs to the east is a lovely place. It is doing a good job of being itself, not trying to emulate Atlanta, Savannah and certainly not Augusta or Macon. Attracting new jobs and growing old established companies. For city of approximately 192,000 people it is amazing, especially since it is not really a tourist town, it therefore has to have enough entertainment to keep the locals happy. Did you hear the good news, Opelika will be getting a very large entertainment and amusement park to celebrate Alabama's history, this will create about 5,000 more jobs for the area. By 2012 this area would have created about 25 - 35,000 jobs or more, that's not bad for an area with a population of only about 600,000. The only down side is that Columbus will run out industrial land, maybe Fort Benning will give us some of their's. Harris and Talbot Counties we need land.

I ditto what was said earlier in that what I like about Columbus is that you have the amenities of a big town with a small town feel. It is on the upswing and a lot of investment is going into Columbus especially downtown.

Columbus seems to have a lot of development going on right now. The metro area is booming with new jobs, retail centers, etc.

Thank goodness its not trying to emulate Augusta or Macon...those two cities are case studies on what to avoid.

I have lived near Columbus for almost 15 years and I have seen it grow into what it is today. Columbus is really trying hard to become a true tourist destinatio. The metro will be getting several huge attractions such as Celebrate Alabama- over 500 acres of shopping, dining, and hotels- and the recent revitalization of downtown Pheni City with new lofts, condominiums, and an all new streetscape down broadway. Midtown Columbus is a great organization and I encourage to visit their website and thank them for what they have done and what they will be doing. Midtown Inc. is redoing Wynton Rd Corridor from Peacock Ave. to Hilton Ave. It is really going to look nice. Aflac is adding thousands of new jobs now. Kia is attracting peopl from Montgomery to Macon. It will employ a small army with additional jobs at many of its smaller satellite companies. Downtown Columbus is only a reflection of what it used to be- thank goodness. It has really emerged as fun, clean environment to do business or pleasure in.

I love the Lakebottom area. I think that is where I will be unless I leave Georgia all together.

Interesting news about Opelika... the Alabama side of our area has always had great potential, I've thought.

hello everybody i live in the columbus area and i love it here however i think columbus still needs a lot more work done before brac arrives to our area the first thing that needs to be done first is our roads and interstates they need to be expanded and bigger and fixed worked on and paved again here in columbus and when thats completed and done then they need to focus more on downtown columbus getting it fixed like getting the roads fixed in downtown columbus and paving the roads in downtown columbus after they have fixed the roads in downtown columbus next they need to built more tall buildings in downtown columbus they can build a few condos in downtown columbus that are 10 storys high that would make our downtown look good in columbus
