Property Tax in GA
Not sure if this has been asked specifically but, as we are absolutely ready to move to NW GA, needed to know:
Do you pay tax on your property (personal, such as: cars, lawnmowers, go-karts) every year? Or is it just when you purchase these items.
Also, what is the state tax rate? Tax on food?
These are some of the things I forgot to check out while we were down there over Thanksgiving weekend. Thank you for any info you can provide.

We pay property tax on our cars and homes every year. As for tax on other personal items, that is sales tax and is payed when the item is purchased. Every counties tax is different but I think most counties will fall in the 7% range with a few still at 6%. Food tax also varies by county but most will probably be at 3%. We have a home for sale in Barrow County, and the tax there is 7% sales, 3% food.

Honey, this is Georgia. Seems like every time you turn around, you're being taxed for something. If the county, or state don't get it, Uncle Sam will get it. Shoot, my pa-in-law is 88 years old, no kids in school and still pays school taxes. We look at the grocery receipt to see how much the taxes are, and some items are taxed at 3% and some are taxed at 4%. Go figure. But don't let that discourage you from moving here. We all find things to complain about, no matter where we live. A BIG GEORGIA WELCOME

Sounds like he's living in the wrong county then- in Cherokee County, you can claim exemption from the school tax once you hit 62- that takes approximatley 75% of the total property tax away.

and I **think** in Cobb county there is no school tax when you hit 62.
There are some things that are less expensive here in terms of taxes and some are more. We pay 2400 in property taxes in Cherokee, paid 3300 in Ft. Lauderdale. Our homeowner's was 4500 in Fla, here they are 768.00 per year. Our car insurance basically stayed the same. Car tags are way more here. Just got my renewal and it is 186.00. In Fla, they were about 30.00
Good luck!

I live in NE ga Jackson County and have 10 acres that I put in conservation...this years taxes...drum roll please $84.54
Plus I have a deep water well...never gone dry and with our drought situation everyone should take where they are moving to into consideration.
My property is mostly in hardwoods that gets a bigger tax break and I also have 2 acres in pasture. I have a 1200 sqft MH on it right now but had planned on building but since I'm moving I'm sure who ever buys might have a different dream for their home. It's for sale so contact me if anyones interested.

Taxes will likely be $2000-$2500, and insurance should be under $500.

Special Assessment Programs
There are other special assessment programs available to property owners. These special programs include:
Preferential Agricultural Property
Bona fide agricultural property can be assessed at 75 percent of the assessment of other property. This means that this type of property is assessed at 30 percent of fair market value rather than 40 percent. Property that qualifies for this special assessment must be maintained in its current use for a period of ten years.
Conservation Use Property
Bona fide agricultural property can be assessed at its current use value rather than the fair market value. Property that qualifies for this special assessment must be maintained in a current use for a period of ten years.
Environmentally Sensitive Property
Property can be assessed at its current use value rather than the fair market value when the property is maintained in its natural condition and meets the requirements set by the Department of Natural Resources. Property that qualifies for this special assessment must be maintained in a current use for a period of ten years.
Residential Transitional Property
Property can be assessed at its current use value, rather than fair market value, when it is used for residential purposes but located in an area that is changing to, or being developed for, a use other than residential.
