cgballer,
The Georgia state Tourist Bureau (or whatever the actual name of the agency is) will send you for free a thick booklet about places to visit in Georgia and a map.
It usually takes a while to get the booklet, so if you think you might be interested, I'd call right away.
I'm not sure whether people have to pay to get in the booklet, I kind of have it in my mind that they do...but if you order the booklet you will see pictures of some of the places that people on this list have recommended. For example, there was a nice picture of The Blue Willow Inn (they also have a website). There is a Blue Willow restaurant, but it's the Inn that features TRADITIONAL southern food. The Inn also has a gift shop.
Not too far from that Inn is a small winery that features wine made from muscadines (native Georgia grapes which don't grow in bunches) and also from blueberries. I don't know if you or your friends are interested in wine, but it is kind of "adventurous" to try blueberry wine (as long as you don't think of it as wine for dinner). This is not one of the real pretty wineries up north, but still is kind of interesting in it's way if you end up going to Social Circle. I can't remember the name of the winery or it's exact location, but it might be in the section where you would find Social Circle, Madison, Rutlege, etc.
I THINK the phone number is 1-800-Visit GA. I'm going from my memory (which 'ain't' so great). If that doesn't work you could do a search on Georgia + tourism.
BTW, if you're the person that gave me the reputation point, thanks. I just learned how to do that recently.
All the best,
zebbie
PS I'm sure glad you posed your question because now WE have a list of restaurants to try in Athens and Columbus.
