Default Richmond Vs Columbia County

I made this thread because some of the posters are not being honest about columbia county and augusta. When people are asking about moving to augusta, some say oh richmond county schools are bad don't move there. Some not all are trying to act like columbia county schools are so much better than richmond. I think some people are not telling the truth, by acting like richmond has all the problems. So if you are moving to augusta don't be fooled, west augusta in richmond county is still the best area in metro augusta. Don't listen if some try to act like everything is peachy and cozy in other counties. Your child can get a quality education in richmond besides davidson ar johnson magnet schools. Richmond county has kids graduating and going to college just like others aiken, columbia, mcduffie, edgefield, burke, and lincoln.

All in columbia county

A 19-year-old Columbia County man was arrested at Evans High School on Monday after police say they found a machete and a small amount of marijuana in his car.
Joseph Lunceford, of the 4100 block of Sweetbrier Drive in Martinez, was on campus to pick up someone, Columbia County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said. A school administrator asked Mr. Lunceford to turn down the radio in his car. When he refused, school officials called police. A search of Mr. Lunceford's car turned up the marijuana and knife, which was about 30 inches long, according to Capt. Morris. Mr. Lunceford was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of a weapon on school grounds, a felony. He was transported to Columbia County Jail, where he was being held late Monday afternoon.

Greenbrier students arrested
Three Greenbrier High School students - two of them football players - have been arrested off campus on drug charges.
The arrests took place Friday night on Belair Road near Interstate 20 during narcotics surveillance, said Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.
Trip Mischel, 17, of Shadow Oak Drive in Evans, a placekicker, was charged with possession of cocaine and released on a $2,600 bond, Capt. Morris said.
Tyrone Bonds, a wide receiver, of Hamilton Court in Evans, was charged with possession of Ecstasy and marijuana with a bond set at $3,700. He remains in custody because of a probation hold, Capt. Morris said.
Andrew Lasure, 17, of Evans, was charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine and was released on a $3,700 bond.
Two other adults also were arrested.

Teen arrested with box cutter
An Evans High School student was arrested Friday after police said she threatened a classmate with a box cutter.
At about 2 p.m., the 16-year-old Martinez girl pulled a box cutter on a male classmate whom she had disagreed with in the past, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said. No one was injured.
The girl, whose name wasn't released because of her age, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon on school property and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, Capt. Morris said.
She was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center before being transferred to the Youth Detention Center.

Robbery in Martinez
After a brief attempt to evade capture, two Evans teens were taken into custody and charged with burglarizing a Martinez home.
Adrian Smith, 18, and a 16-year-old have been charged with burglarizing a home on the 3700 block of Murray Road. Mr. Smith has also been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
According to Capt. Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, the Murray Road resident came home and found one of the suspects leaving his carport, carrying a sleeping bag with a rifle protruding from it.
Both suspects were spotted soon afterward and taken into custody. The juvenile was taken to the Regional Youth Detention Center. Mr. Smith is currently being held on $11,100 bond at the Columbia County Detention Center.

Two Evans Teenagers in Burglary
Richmond County authorities apprehended two Evans teenagers Thursday accused of taking part in a burglary on River Ridge Road.
Stephen John Logan, and David Joseph Barrett, both 17, are accused in a break-in that occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at a couple's home, a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report states.
Mr. Logan and Mr. Barrett were charged with felony burglary, jail records show. Mr. Barrett was being held at the Richmond County jail without bond, while Mr. Logan was released at about 4 p.m. on $5,050 bail, officials said.

Recent events at Columbia County schools that have led to arrests from wrdw augusta

A Columbia Middle School sixth-grader confessed to writing a hit list Wednesday, authorities said. The 11-year-old boy, who was charged with making terroristic threats, was found in possession of a list with 11 names on it, Columbia County sheriffís Capt. Steve Morris said.

An 18-year-old Evans High School student was arrested Tuesday after marijuana and a knife was found in his car , school officials said.

A 15-year-old Columbia Middle School girl was charged with making terroristic threats and acts after death threats and suicidal remarks were found on the walls of the girlsí rest room March 19. It included a hit list with multiple first names, according to a sheriffís office report.

A 12-year-old Columbia Middle School boy was charged with possession of a weapon on school property March 18 after officials found a 3-inch folding knife.

A 18-year-old Evans High School student was charged with aggravated assault May 24 after he reportedly held a knife to a fellow studentís throat.

Four Columbia County high school students have been arrested at their school during the past few days on drug charges, county police announced Tuesday.
Police arrested Matthew Akins, 18, at Evans High at about 11 a.m. Tuesday after 45 Xanax pills were found inside his book bag, sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.
A teacher reported that Mr. Akins appeared to be under the influence of a drug or alcohol at the time of the search.
He was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center, where he was held on a $2,500 bond Tuesday.

All from harlem high school now

School gets third bomb threat
Harlem High School again was subjected to a bomb threat Tuesday, keeping students and staff away for about 90 minutes.
The third threat came after the arrests of seven students in a Nov. 23 bomb threat phoned in to the school. The students were charged with terroristic threats and acts -- a felony. Six of them are juveniles; four were charged Monday and released. Two other juveniles remain in custody at the Regional Youth Detention Center in Augusta pending a hearing Friday. Also arrested and released on bond was John Palmer, 18, of the 100 block of Hollingsworth Drive in Grovetown.
Tuesday's threat was phoned in at about 10:50 a.m.; students returned to class at about 12:20 p.m.
``It's serious business,'' Harlem High Principal Barry Hemphill said. ``There's just a tremendous loss of time.''
No connection has been made between the first incident and the most recent threat, Columbia County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said. The second bomb threat was made Dec. 1.

Two arrests occurred at Harlem High at about 2:30 p.m. Monday after a public safety officer found 1.7 grams of marijuana in a truck driven by Nathan Caleb Gates, 17, of the 1300 block of Lone Oak Road, Grovetown, Capt. Morris said. An occupant in the vehicle, Meagan Rose Fennell, 18, of the 5200 block of Oak Springs Drive, Grovetown, also was charged. Mr. Gates and Ms. Fennell were taken to the Columbia County Detention Center and each later posted a $1,100 bond

Shortly before 3 p.m. Friday, Cooper James Crawford, 17, of the 300 block of Louisville Street, Harlem, was arrested at Harlem High after the school's principal received information from another student that Mr. Crawford had marijuana in his vehicle, Capt. Morris said. The principal had Mr. Crawford's vehicle searched and 1.7 grams of marijuana was found, Capt. Morris said. Mr. Crawford was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center and later released on $1,100 bond.

Nine Harlem High School students were arrested Tuesday morning after a fight broke out in the commons area of the school, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.

[

It started with two students who had a disagreement " he said. "It started with the two, and friends from both sides decided to join in

The students included Reid Charles Forzley, 17, of the 4300 block of Felmellow Drive, Grovetown; Rafael Jose Perez, 18, of the 4000 block of Nantucket Circle, Grovetown; DeShawn Lee Shelton, 18, of the 4700 block of Marthas Way, Grovetown; and Daryl Donnell Givens, 17, of the 1200 block of Klondike Drive, Grovetown, according to the sheriff's office.
Five juveniles, whose names were not released, also were arrested in the incident.
Capt. Morris said each of the nine male students will be charged with two misdemeanors - fighting in public and disrupting public school.

This is a rant in augusta chronicle from a parent who child attends harlem high

I AM RANTING ABOUT this crazy school system. My child is a student at Harlem High School and the students at that school get in so many fights. My child came home Friday and ... said that there had been three fights in one day! One of them was at the end of the day, and many people could have been trampled severely. I mean, this is outrageous. The school is suppose to be a safe haven for kids. Some also have enough problems at home

No one said richmond has all the problems but it has significantly more than Columbia County schools. This is like making a comparison of Dekalb County schools and Gwinnett County... Gwinnett County schools are simply better than Dekalb for the most part..they spend more per student and pay teacers more (teachers do make more in Columbia County... this is a FACT.. they are able to attract the better teachers.. not saying Richmond County doesn't have good teachers but they tend to be less the norm in Richmond County).. then you have demographics... students in Richmond county are much more likely to come from lower income and lower educated households (Richmond County has over a quarter of its population living below the poverty line. There is a direct correlation in socio-ecomomic status and student achievement. There is simply a much higher liklihood that a student attending public school in Columbia County will be surrounded by other students from more high achieving, highly educated households.

Columbia county has a affluent population, but so does west augusta lets not forget. Westside in west richmond county had the highest median income among students parents in richmond. Only 20% of ppl are in poverty in richmond county which does need to go to 15 or 17.
The richmond county lower income black students attend josey and laney the only 2 inner cities highschools of 8 public in richmond. The poor rural white kids go to crosscreek, or hephzibah, but these schools have some middle or upper middle class students who attend unlike laney and josey. Alot of harlem students in columbia county come from very poor rural areas in grovetown and harlem. Grovetown and harlem have more poor than evans, thats why they didnt want evans to become a city. That would leave them landlocked and with more poor or lower class residents.

Median Income

Richmond 45 to 47,000 even with poverty in its inner cities

Columbia 63 to 65,000 with less poor and 100,000 less or 110,000 less ppl if hephzibah & blythe were included for augusta

Some of the new money is in columbia county, but all the old money is still in richmond

The demographics you speak of

The racial makeup of richmond county was 45.55% White, 49.75% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 1.50% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 1.01% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races. 2.78% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Not really the inner city baltimore, dc, or miami you are trying to reach for about poor and education. I would think alot of the parents who didnt go to college are from rural areas in aiken, columbia, richmond, and burke.Augusta' s white flight which is usually upper middle class whites moving to the burbs and leaving the city. Is not like atlanta when it saw up to high sixtes in black population in the city of atlanta. In fact blacks and asians population has grown in columbia county.

These stats are alot diffrent now probably 65% to 70% white since population has grown to 100k
Columbia county was 82.67% White, 11.21% Black or African American, 0.32% Native American, 3.36% Asian (0.6% of the Asians are of South Asian descent), 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 2.59% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

JohnDoeBoy,

Your arguments have vastly improved.

Your point is well taken; there are ‘problem children’ in both (all) school systems.

From the reports I have reviewed, the overall academic stats still favor the Columbia school district. If you remove the Harlem HS area from the Columbia stats (use Evans and Martinez stats only), the stats improve significantly. As with all counties, there are good schools and bad schools, in most cases this is driven by social/economic factors.

Just wanted to add that Richmond County schools were cited in 2006 for repeatedly not reporting violent incidents. No doubt there are bad apples on both sides, but I think it is clear Richmond County has more crime than Columbia County.

I understand your point, and I agree that Richmond County isn't as bad as some make it out to be. However, facts are facts. Instead of cherry picking a few incidents from one county or the other, let's take a look at the numbers overall and let people judge for themselves. This is from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's website georgia.gov - Crime Statistics Search :

GBI Crime Statistics for Richmond County During 2006

Murder: 16
Rape: 139
Robbery: 623
Assault: 265
Burglary: 2898
Larceny: 9500
Vehicle Theft: 1860

GBI Crime Statistics for Columbia County During 2006

Murder: 0
Rape: 14
Robbery: 33
Assault: 51
Burglary: 323
Larceny: 1396
Vehicle Theft: 136

I am curious to know what action have you decided to take; Richmond or Columbia?

If you choose Columbia, do not forget to look into areas near Patriot's Park. There are some beautiful new developments in that area. Specifically, the new communities along William Frye Boulevard; between Washington and Columbia Roads. This area is also close to the Greenbrier schools.

Regardless of where you choose to live, the education and behavior of your children are on you; not the school system. You can raise your kids or let them loose in the system.
