Should be interesting to see what they propose for this mixed-use development.

I hate to say it, but that many public uproar in Athens over Wal-mart being included really made them lose sight over the other aspects of the old proposed project.

I think they missed out big time on a mixed-use project that incorporated into a the town street scape on the downtown side. The rest of the tract will now probably end up being mostly student apartments in patchy development, rather than one huge master planned development.

I also think many people overplayed what a central Wal-Mart would do to Downtown Athens economy. It isn't a typical town center. It is mostly eating places, boutiques, specialty shops, bars, and scattered office buildings and hotels. There really isn't much that a Wal-Mart would put out of business. There is also grocery store within walking distance of that area, which is one factor for students really needing to have cars in Athens.
