What can anyone tell me about Athens? The housing prices, the community, the people, the amenities, the schools, the shopping, the traffic? I expect there's a whopping number of college students---but how would it be for a young couple in their late 20's early 30's, no kids yet?

I live near Athens (Winder) and I really like it.

House prices in Athens are cheaper than in the Atlanta area, and traffic is much better. Traffic in Athens is awful on game days, but sooo much easier than Atlanta every other day of the week.

Shopping is pretty good. There's a Target, Home Depot, Lowes, and a mall.

The night life in Athens looks pretty good to me -- since I'm already married w/ children, my night life is spent at home ... but Athens is definitely a college town. I'm sure you'll fit in fine.

If you plan on working in Atlanta, then Athens might be too far. Expect at least 2hrs from Athens to Atlanta -- that's during non-peak hours.

One other item you might consider is property taxes. Property taxes in Clarke county (Athens) is high compared to nearby counties, like Oconee and Barrow. On the other hand, schools in Clarke county are probably better.

I moved to Athens from Connecticut close to 2 years ago. The housing prices are affordable. It's funny because I sold my townhouse in CT for $180k (2 bed/1.5 bath). I purchased a 3 bed/2 bath house in Athens for $145k!
The people are generally nice down here.
Shopping - there are quite a few chain stores and cute little shops downtown. There are some great restaurants, too.
Traffic - well, as the poster before me mentioned, avoid the downtown area during home football games!
The Atlanta Highway gets pretty busy, but it's manageable.
By the way, I am 31 and I have adjusted quite well to this college town ; )

Like the previous poster stated, its cheaper in the outlying counties, but Athens is where the true character is. Oconee really sucks as far as that goes. Nothing but strip malls and Mcmansions, especially the 316/loop area over to Watkinsville...just gross.

I'd stay in Clarke County for sure...Athens is probably the best town in Georgia IMO.

Hi, We are looking at moving to the Athens area this summer. My husband may be working at the university. We've been told that the schools in Oconee county were really good. Is this true? Is the crime rate high in Athens? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey, it only takes 10-15 minutes to get into Athens from Oconee!

Athens can be a fun place to be... the bars downtown are set up so you can just walk from bar to bar... really crowded and fun, i don't know know about crime... certain "crime" is prevalent there among the younger people if you know what I mean, but I dont know about violent crime...
