I believe you meant to say that Augusta has the largest urban core out of Macon and COLUMBUS ... or at least I HOPE that is what you meant to say, because Savannah obviously has the largest (and best preserved, and most dense, and most busy) urban core of ALL the second-tier cities in Georgia.

That said, of the three cities referenced in this thread -- Columbus, Macon and Augusta -- I personally think that Macon has the best "urban core" and the best "bones." Macon's downtown street grid and density of both historic and more modern buildings really cannot be matched by Columbus and Augusta. Downtown Macon is a true gem that is just now becoming rediscovered. I expect great things in the coming years out of Downtown Macon. It's a true jewel in the rough.
