My husband is retiring and I have been retired for five years. We are living in Connecticut (transplanted from upstate (way up) NY where the politics are far too liberal and the taxation so burdensome we cannot afford to stay. The long winters have become too much for us to handle.

We have visited and considered northern GA as a retirement area for several years. Now we must get serious. Why we chose N. GA: beautiful views of the mountains, friendly people, small town atmosphere.

Our first town choice is Blue Ridge. We like the size of the town, the friendliness of the people, the availability of shopping and dining. Our second choice is Ellijay which we also have visited and found friendly and convenient.

What should we know about other towns or these two? We are planning a trip this next week to the area and any advice is appreciated.

Though you have picked two really good ones ,I would add a couple of others to the list . Those towns I'd suggest you look at would be Blairsville , Hiawassee, Young Harris, and Clayton .All are on the northern boarder with North Carolina. Each one is beautiful and they each are very different in their own unique way.

Dahlonega is good.

My favorite is Rabun county, which includes Clayton, Dillard, Lakemont and the mountain lakes = Lake Burton and Lake Rabun.

Dahlonega is a nice town. Blue Ridge is becoming a tourist trap and Unfortunely Atlanta is invading it on the weekends and bringing their ways with them. You said Upstate NY is liberal I disagree when I visit its just as red and conservative as Georgia.

For retirees the ones mentioned are great. Lived in Clayton with kids at one time and Dahlonega...not for us and harassed by local government entities. But for retirees should be fine....Dahlonega is nice bc its close to Gainesville but also has college which helps it with younger feel to it...Clayton is pretty far from decent size town.

Having spent almost 4 or 5 months of the year in Blue Ridge for 6 years, we find it to be friendly, clean and simply a wonderful area. The lake is gorgeous and there's so much to do outside. Nice boutiques, good restaurants and good grocery shopping. There's a Home Depot and terrific Ace Hardware. The city and county appear to be well managed. I love it there and imagine you would, too.

We bought a vacation home in the N. Ga. Mountains six years ago. A change in job circumstances has meant being here almost full time the last year. From Blue Ridge to Hiawassee to Dahlonega, what could be better than living in a place some people only dream about coming to for vacation once in a while? Quaint small towns, friendly people, and beautiful scenery. SSShhhh... just don't tell everyone!

You can't go wrong with any of these Blairsville , Hiawassee, Young Harris, and Clayton. Blue Ridge is nice as well. Lived in Ellijay years ago, didn't care as much for it.
