Excluding Savannah, which cities in the state have the most impressive historic districts? Consider architecture, size, etc. If you're up for it, how about a top 5 or top 10.

It's an interesting question the answer for which my spouse and I are quite interested to see. However, I wonder: Is your question trying to ascertain a list of such places for comparison to other states, or rather just interested in ideas for day/weekend trips? If the latter, then perhaps considering neighboring states as well might be fruitful.

I'd have to say Macon.

Agree. While GA was a colony, there weren't a lot of large settlements. Atlanta, Milledgeville and Augusta were part of Sherman's scorched Earth campaign but Savannah surrendered without a fight on the condition it not be burned.

It depends. I know Augusta and Columbus have large historic districts outside their downtown areas

Default I know you said cities, but let's look at historic districts of any size...

Madison, hands down, must be at the top of any list of historic downtowns in Georgia to visit.

You'll catch references here and there to something called the "antebellum trail". Basically, this would be some conbination of US Routes 129 and 441 from Athens to Macon, by way of Milledgeville added in. Towns along the way that are worth skipping the 4-lane bypasses for are Watkinsville, Eatonton, and Old Clinton.

One other town that, in my opinion, deserves honorable mention is Washington.

I agree here. While Madison doesn't have blocks and blocks of historical buildings like some of the larger cities, it is truly a beautiful place worth a visit. The quality of its homes and the level of preservation is great.

Believe it or not, Macon has the most homes on the historic register in the state of Georgia, even more than Savannah has.

Here's a good article.

In sites and sound, history lives in Macon, Ga.
