This is a list of the urbanized areas in each metro. The urbanized area is the developed, built up or "urban and suburban" part of a metro area. (The rest of the metro would be considered rural or "country")

Urbanized Areas:

1. Augusta 231.79 square miles
2. Columbus 136.16 square miles
3. Savannah 102.39 square miles
4. Warner Robins 80.91 square miles
5. Macon 80.53 square miles
6. Athens 79.56 square miles
7. Albany 65.89

Again all information is obtained from the Census Bureau Home Page website.

I have some more information from the census site which will tell more about the economy for each metro. Now They only had information based on MSA not CSA because I did try to find both but apparently the folks at the us census felt that the economy for each MSA was the only important factor. These numbers are from 2002 because the economic census is only done every five years. The next one will be for 2007.

This first chart is the total revenue done by all business establishments in each metro.

1. Augusta...................30,590,591,000
2. Savannah................21,028,456,000
3. Columbus................16,209,643,000
4. Macon.....................13,869,467,000

I further showed a break down of some of the main categories of business in each metro.

This next chart is the total revenue done by just the retail establishments in each metro.

1. Augusta...................5,653,874,000
2. Savannah................3,360,695,000
3. Columbus................2.784,723,000
4. Macon....................2,450,858,000

This next chart is the total revenue by just the food and hospitality establishments in each metro.

1. Savannah................643,155,000
2. Augusta...................565,364,000
3. Columbus................400,661,000
4. Macon.....................300,860,000

This final chart shows the total amount of payroll paid out by all the businesses with at least one employee in each metro. These payroll stats are from 2005.

1. Augusta................6,077,760,000
2. Savannah.............4,081,539,000
3. Columbus.............2,803,093,000
4. Macon..................2,699,887,000

The Crime rate in Georgia by MSA . This information was taken from the FBI website and represents 2005 the latest year for their results.

Violent Crime

1. Augusta 392.3 (safest)

2. Columbus 422.1

3. Atlanta 492

4. Macon 501.6

5. Savannah 582.9 (most unsafe)

Property Crimes

1. Atlanta 4115.2 (safest)

2. Augusta 4518.5

3. Savannah 4737.7

4. Columbus 5468.6

5. Macon 6180.7 (most unsafe)

Again I couldn't find the stats for the CSAs, just the MSAs.

Based on both lists:

1. Augusta (safest)
2. Atlanta
3. Columbus
4. Savannah
5. Macon (most unsafe)

Yes I'm sure Macon-Warner Robins will merge back together which will most likely move up to number 3.......because right now from the figures you posted with Macon-WR combined the metro pop would be at 356,856 which would soar right above Savannah..

If one prospers the other will eventually. The friendly competition of Macon and Warner Robins cannot be matched, by any other in the state. The competition provides to boast both cities and make them be the best that they can be. Also with the way crime has dropped in Macon, i'm sure the city won't be the most unsafe (ON PAPER) when 2010 comes around.

Savannah and Columbus could merge with other metros in their CSA's as well so it will be hard to assume where they will rank until we know for sure if any of these metros will merge or not.

I am proud to say that Augusta is definately growing and FAST. Ft Gordon has just completed some major project with more in the works as several smaller bases in GA are closed and transfered to Ft. G.

Lots of major growth going along 1-20. Columbia County, specifically Evans, GA. is expericance quite a bit of growth and expanstion. There is plan to build a mini city in Evans that will offer more restraunts, housing, hotels. etc. I have seen the master plan to this and it looks awesome! Going up towards Lincolnton and Thomson more growth. Even Wilkes county- lots of people leaving Atlanta for the peace and quite of Wilkes county and the lure of the lake. Should see those NICE,NICE communities that are being built on the lake. Augusta and the CSRA holds lots of promise for the future! While it is a bit slow, it's coming. As far as race goes. There are and always be ingnorant people out there, black, white, yellow or green. Those are the people that I pay no attention to. I do unto others as they do unto me. And I also believe karma comes around full circle and it can either be good or it can be bad. With that said, welcome to all the new comers to the area!
