Georgia 2nd Tier Cities, Why ALL THE HATE?
Why do I sense so much tension between the 2nd Tier Cities of Georgia on this site? When someone feels good about where they are from and mentions positives about their city a bitter, negative person is right there to tear them down. That same bitter person then turns around and gets upset when someone says something about their town.
Perhaps you guys should try living in some of the New Jersey towns like Camden and Newark before you want to talk about how bad your precious Georgia cities' crime and poor leadership are. Why is it a crime for a person to have pride about where they are from?

I think it boils down to pure jealousy to be honest. Most of the cities are about the same size (Columbus, Augusta, and Savannah) with Macon being the smallest. Atlanta is the lead dog, and the 2nd tier cities are fighting to be the "lead dogs" second in command.

Also people here seem to have too much time on there hands. Seriously I believe half of the people have never visited many of these cities. They just go by hearsay and then form their opinion on the city. Here's an idea: Get out of the front of your computers, take a day trip if gas isn't that bad of an option for you and explore different areas of the state. Then and only then can you have an defining opinion of a place. Going by stats and what your friend John, or Rick or Buddy said doesn't cut it.

I wouldn't say it out-classes these cities. I lived in Athens for 4 years in school. It is a lot more pedestrian oriented though.

Yes I agree people on this site are really going by he say she say, and not facts. Many of these people probably havent been outside of there little town they call home. Its much more to this state, no world than just these places we call home, and I believe we should invest in going to these places. Unfactual information also comes from people who've been to a town ten years ago and make perceptions. A town can change drastically over 10 years, look at Warner Robins, 10 years ago I never would have thought the town of some 20,000 people would grow to exceed that of 40,000 and continues to look beyond that in the near future. We all need to get outside of our towns, I travel but not as nearly as much as I would like. There is also a high negativity amound the users of this site, and I just dont understand why. I have contributed to the negativity but some people go to the extent of Macon it there life.

Sure? Using your logic, Macon has the 2nd largest metro population in the state of GA. But those of us who actually live here know that is not true. The size of metro areas in GA are in the following order:
Atlanta
Augusta
Savannah
Columbus
Macon
Combined Statistical Areas are as follows:
Atlanta
Augusta
Columbus
Savannah
Macon

Its pretty simple to me, Savannah and Augusta would be the next level after ATL when it comes to urbanity. Savannah would have the edge over Augusta to me. After that you're left with Macon and Columbus, and because of location, nightlife, heritage/tourism, more urban environment I would choose Macon ahead of Columbus.
Atlanta
Savannah
Augusta
Macon
Columbus
I've actually been in these cities a good bit, especially Macon and Columbus. The main thing to remember is that with Macon and Columbus, we're not quite on Augusta and Savannah's level.
I agree with roamfree, most of this stat tossing doesn't cut it because the fact of the matter is ALL of our cities have great developments going on to improve our areas, ALL of our cities have some rough patches of inner city and all of our cities have good/bad schools.
Some people on here like to shower on anyone else's parade about their city even being so much as livable (especially with Albany, Augusta and Macon). I believe they are all livable with nice areas depending on what part of town you are in though.

I definitely think Columbus and Macon are on Augusta's level. Columbus' area population is not that much smaller than Augusta's if you include the Auburn/Opelika area. The A/O area will probably be counted in Columbus' MSA in the 2010 count. Look at all of the new development that is being done in Columbus and Macon. Both these cities are really taking off compared to Augusta. Columbus is gaining 30,000-45,000 new residents by 2011 which will push the city population about 20,000+ people higher than Augusta. I am in real estate development, and I say lookout for the next hottest areas, that being Columbus and Macon.
