I personally live in St. Marys and love it. It's about 15-30 minute drive to various parts of Jacksonville. It's also near beaches (Ft. Clinch is one of my favorites), an international airport, malls, and all the usual positives of a city without being overcrowded like a city. We also have Cumberland Island which always makes a nice day trip if you're into nature and all and lots of local restaurants. There is also Kingsland, but it is more developed and I would not think it would make a good place to retire. Downtown would probably be your best bet for finding somewhere relaxing to live; and if you like fishing you can get plenty of it here! There's also the gated community of Osprey Cove and the golfing community of Laurel Island Links. Sugarmill is also a good place; we're getting more and more retiring couples moving into Sugarmill, mostly I think because it's a quiet suburb with fair housing prices and easy access to amenities (can you tell I"m a little biased : ) It's also good if you have family that might want to visit. Besides St. Marys, St. Simons is beautiful. I would not want to live in Brunswick, but that's just me.
