I have mostly voted for Republicans over the past 30 years, and on balance, I think Republicans have more respect for personal freedom that Democrats in general. However, these so-called "religious liberty" bills are a response to a problem that largely does not exist and which attempt to exploit ignorance. There are plenty of sensible smart Republican leaders in this state, even if it appears they are outnumbered by fools who apparently include far more than just Josh McKoon who had been the poster-boy for this type of nonsense until now.
ChristopherATL makes a good point that this current religious liberty controversy is a move that has been calculated as a way to energize and galvanize the critical voting block of arch-conservatives who dominate Georgia's electoral process.

This current religious liberty controversy is also seen as a necessity by supermajority Republican-dominated legislative leadership because of the rumors that the state legislature may potentially make an attempt to expand Medicaid next year as a way of saving the state's financially-troubled rural and urban hospitals in advance of the 2018 statewide election cycle....This is because some GOP leaders fear that the challenges and closings of many rural and some urban hospitals across the state could potentially become an election issue during the 2018 Georgia governor's race if left unaddressed.

Legislative leadership also wants to give conservative GOP base voters a bone in return for the discussions on increasing funding to transit that are likely going to occur in future legislative sessions.

Because of the pending conversations about expanding Medicaid and increasing funding to transit, two actions that the very conservative base of the GOP despises, the state's GOP-dominated legislative leadership sees the passage of some type of strong religious liberty legislation during the current election year as a necessity.

It is because of this political calculus that the question likely will not be whether or not some type of controversial religious liberty passes the legislature and gets signed into law but how controversial the religious liberty legislation will be and whether or not the public relations and economic fallout can be minimized so that the least amount of damage is done.

That's typical. Bury your head in the sand when faced with the real problem plaguing the gay community.
What an asinine comment. This is a forum. I saw the news about the backlash - nothing significant I might add and shared it. Since this is a forum, there can also be discussions on the CDC news.

Last time I checked, my thread wasn't the only one here.... please take your condescension and arrogance
to another thread. I believe that the Internet is bigger than this thread.

Maybe you can't, but other people are well capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time.

I'm not confident of that at all. Deal ran one of the most disgusting anti-gay campaigns ever to get the Republican nomination for governor.

Default NCAA will boycot because if GA passes discrimination bill.

Threats of a boycott erupted. Hometown businesses threatened to relocate. Industry recruiting prospects shuddered. The NCAA, which is headquartered in the Hoosier State, said it would consider moving Final Four tournaments scheduled there for 2016 and 2021.

Gearing up for next

I will probably get an infarction for typing this but I think a church has every right to refuse to wed same sex partners. And if they do then go find someplace that does. They already approved same sex marriages...when will the gay community be satisfied?
