With the full knowledge that this post of mine is overly dramatic, something is afoot that I think we all need to mindful of: If this bill passes and is signed by the Goober Governor, it'll be a watershed moment in American history.

What do I mean by that? Think Dredd Scott case, Brown V. Board of Education, or the Immigration Ct of 1924 ( the law that barred immigration to this country from Asia and Southern/Eastern Europe for 40 years) big. These events preceded major social upheaval that forever changed this country, often at great cost.

How our elected officials react to public reaction to this will set the national tone on this matter for the next generation. Let us hope these officials, goobers they may be, make the right decision based on the economic reasons alone.

Otherwise we're headed down a path of hurt I do not think this State, and most importantly this grand metropolis of ours, will never recover from. If you thought the Great Recession was bad, this will be worse.

While not a business owner (heck, I haven't worked outside the home in 7 years, ought to just call this retirement), I also tend to believe in a "right to refuse".

There are simply problem customers, people who CAN NOT be satisfied. Forcing a business to consistently deal with these people is bad for business in all aspects. Worst case is those people simply run the business (always small/local businesses) out of town. Now, who does THAT benefit?

The flip side of that is why would anyone want to be a patron of a business who didn't want them there/to serve them? This is such a mind-boggling question that I've yet to find someone who can answer it to my satisfaction.

Bad business? Vote with your feet/wallet, they won't survive if they really ARE a bad business.

But that's just my opinion.

Some of the dumbest people live in Georgia. Yeah they have the right to voice their opinions but at what expense? If we allow bigots and racists to takeover then Georgia will be going backwards. I can't wait for the day that Atlanta metro has the votes and power to run this hillbilly state. Enough with their antics and shenanigans.

For those of you who think this issue affects some "other" group, a lot of us on this forum fall under the LGBT umbrella.

Default Growing Corporate Backlash Grows Against Religious Freedom Bill

"A Salesforce spokeswoman emailed a statement to the AJC in response: “This discussion is about Georgia, where our local employees have asked us to get involved. We are not alone—more than 400 businesses have joined Georgia Prospers to oppose this bill in its current form. We were encouraged by comments from Governor Deal indicating that the bill is not in its final form. Salesforce believes in equality for all. Equal rights is an important issue, both in the U.S. and around the world, and we do whatever we can to protect our employees and customers from discrimination.”

Good post, waronxmas. Thanks for the historical background, too.

Here's the latest....

An alliance is brewing between Gov. Nathan Deal and House Speaker David Ralston to force changes to the “religious liberty” bill that’s inflamed corporate leaders and alarmed the LGBT community. As we told you yesterday, Deal laid down guideposts for the legislation:logo-all

“I do not want us to do anything that will be perceived as allowing discrimination in the state of Georgia. That is not who we are as a people. And I don’t think we have to do that in order to give the security that the faith-based community thinks we need. I want to make sure we don’t go out of balance.”

Ralston told the folks at Georgiapol.com that he hopes to get “calm heads around the table and people that don’t have a political agenda” together over the next three weeks to hash out a compromise. From Georgiapol.com:

“One thing I found out this weekend from talking to people, even in my district is that people, they care about our image as a state. That was one of the things that I think informed the concerns of many people about bringing casinos into Georgia, and I think the same things informed them about that issue.”
