Fort Valley State?
I just received an offer for a full Army ROTC scholarship to Fort Valley State University. I have family on my dad's side living about 30 minutes away from campus, so I'm keeping it as an option. Can anyone tell me anything about the school? How's the education? Are the professors accessible? What about class size? Safety around the campus? Are there things to do in and around the area?
I'm currently living in Okinawa, Japan, so I don't get to travel and visit colleges like other students are able to. I haven't set foot on U.S. soil in YEARS so I'll be a bit clueless if I go to Georgia.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You need to get the full real deal story about FV.
Let me tell you man, I went there one semester and transferred. It wasn't exactly for me but it might be for you. Ft. Valley State is a black college in a very small town. Ft. Valley doesnt even have a wal mart, so that goes to show you about how small of a town it is. During my time there, the dorms were crappy as he!!, but they have built new apartment style dorms. So thats a HUGE upgrade.
If you want to go out any where you will have to drive 10-15 mins to Warner Robins or 25-30 mins to Macon.
Depending on what kind of "party" environment you like, I can say that if urban/black/hip hop is your thing, then they throw several of those.
How old are you and what do you like to get into? Because in my opinion, Ft Valley St. would only be ideal if you are an 18-20 year old fresh out of your parents house, that is into "hip hop" culture. I'm into SOME of that but I'm a little bit up into my 20s and now I find myself viewing FVSU as a school being swarmed by wanna be thugs and wanna be video vixens.

okiallday098 if you can share more personal information we might be able to better answer your questions. For example what activities do you like, have you ever lived in a small town, are either of your parents military?

I have attended FVSU before also and I have to agree with him. I don't mean to toot my own horn but I went there as a senior in high school and I was helping alot of older students with their work. Most students are only concerned about partying. FVSU will accept anybody (smart or dumb). There are very few smart people and a lot of dumb people. Even though it is a predominately black school, they are becoming a little diverse.
They do have new dorms but the students are messing them up quick. Basically if you don't mind being in a ghetto environment then this is the school for you.

Ft.Valley State is a decent school.Like any school you can get as good an education as you want to get.Their Veterinary Science and Agriculture research related programs are highly rated. The current president has increased Fort Valley's enrollment and its academics. Some of the more useless professors of that have been there for too long, have been released. There is an air of optimism and sense of pride that was lacking for a long time before.Mostly due to very poor leaders who lacked vision and foresight.Fort Valley has NEVER lost is accreditation.Nor have they have ever been on probation. My parents both met at Fort Valley during their undergraduate years. They went on elsewhere to get the graduate degrees and are very successful. Many of my parents siblings(on both sides) also went there and all of them have or had decent and in some cases great careers.
After I graduated from there 1998.I went because of my families long times to the school dating back to one of my relatives in the 1895,was one of the original founders.I chose to finished there and I have no regrets. My grandmother also went there and graduated in the 1940's.
There are some ghetto people there ,but to say that the whole school is that way is ridiculous. If you are the type who is not focused and get caught up in the party scene, then yes it will not go well for you.But if you do your own thing and study, you will get what you put in it.
