Question Warner Robins - Northside

Hello! My husband currently has orders to Robins AFB and we are looking to buy a house there in few months. I've been researching the schools in the area (Houston, Peach and Bleckley County) at greatschools.net and I am very much impressed with the Houston County schools, especially the high schools. We've also been looking at the real estate listings online and are focusing on places like Warner Robins, Byron, Cochran, Kathleen, Bonaire and Perry. We're looking for an older home with some land and more square footage than what you get with the newer homes in the cookie-cutter neighborhoods and the North side of Houston county seems to have a lot more to offer as far as that goes.

My concern is that we've been told repeatedly to stay away from the North side of the county and I was just wondering if it is really as bad there as we've read. The high school (Northside) seems to have great reviews from parents and former students - some of the elementary schools seem so-so. I know the North side of the county has the older communities but what is it that is really turning people off to the area?

Also, how do the schools in Peach and Bleckley county measure up? I saw that Bleckley County made the US News & World Report's best high schools list. I've heard that Byron Elementary and Middle School are great but that Peach County HS is less than stellar. I really like that the Houston County high schools have so much more to offer as far as extracurricular activities go.

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Well you heard right and wrong.
Byron Elementary and Byron Middle are great.
But Peach County High school is also very good with test scores to prove it.

SchoolMatters - Home

Inline with Houston County High and Warner Robins and exceeding Northside High and Perry High.
Anyone telling you different has another agenda, I have lived in the area my entire life and my husband graduated from Warner Robins High. In fact, we lived in Warner Robins the first 6 1/2 years we were married and then moved out to Byron 7 years ago.

Good luck, hope this helps...

My two boys graduated from Northside and they did fine. The school is good. I won't lie to you, it did not make AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) the last two years. But don't get me started on the lame No Child Left Behind brewhaha. That stupid program needs fixed before the schools can fix their problem.

Northside has the best - second to none drama department in the Houston County district. Since 1963, the NHS drama department has won all but four region One-Act competition and not lost since 1973. The NHS Eagles are 44-1 in the last three football seasons and have won back-to-back (2006 & 2007) state 4A championships with 2006 being it's first ever championship in the school's history. If you are looking for a place to live I highly recommend the northside of town, especially in the county. The taxes are lower in the county. My second recommendation is to pick Warner Robins high over Houston County high. Please feel free to personally and privately IM me my reasoning behind that.

The school does not cause or effect the involvement of a parent. So what are you trying to say Peelo?

BTW: Kathleen will be getting a high school in 2 years

Northside’s drama department is not just the best in Houston County, but it is one of the best in the state. Northside has won fifteen State One-Act Competitions including 2006 and 2007 and has won state championships in other literary competitions in 2006-2007. And Northside has its own theatre where some fantastic productions are held.

Also, Northside just built a girl’s softball field with lights a couple of years ago. And lights were recently added to the girl’s soccer field so they can play in the evenings.

Northside is a fine high school and is the equal of any other school in Houston County.

If you want to live near grocery stores such as Kroger, Publix, and Super Wal-Mart, Cochran is small town that does not have stores like these or other decent shopping. There really isn’t much in Byron either. I personally wouldn’t drive all the way from the Robins Air Force base to either of these places unless I had some special reason to be there.

ummm....we live in south Byron (off 247 connector) and there are lots of military families in our neighborhood. Takes me a whopping 7 minutes to get to the new Kroger on Watson Blvd.in Warner Robins. Bet you living IN Warner Robins have to sit in traffic longer than that. I know because I used to live there. It is very congested.

Blue Eagle,

What's nice about the Byron though is it is close to I-75 and makes it fast and easy to get to Macon. Now that the new Kroger is on the 247 connector I just drive down Houston Lake to Gunn Rd to Margie and take the back way into Kroger. Besides, if she is like me, she probably will shop at the commissary on base. There again, it's easy to hop on Dunbar Rd to 247 to the base. Some of the houses in Bryon are in the Houston County School district.

I didnt try to say anything, other than what I wrote.....Too many thugs at WR and the athletes get away with anything and everything. Its just what I said....If I HAD to send a child to WR, I would be VERY involved because of the "lackness"....HOCO is better, in my opinion.

Between all the Houston County High Schools, I'd choose Perry High School. At HOCO High, it's all about pretentiousness, and that fault lies within the parents. Parents who drank the koolaid and now serve it to their kids in letting them believe they are better than anyone else.

It's funny, I was reading an article in the latest Houston County Magazine about Prescott Suzuki and it's owner. Nice article, but the pictures in the spread featured the guy's HOUSE. What does his house have anything to do with his business? And it was a nice house in Statham's Landing. It's all about pretension. It's also one of the reasons we left Houston County. We do well ourselves, but I refuse to let my family be judged on our bank accounts. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's true.

If you haven't grown up in the area and went to school in the area yourself, you cannot sit back and claim it isn't true.
