I am from Rome and I would tell anyone - don't move to Rome! It's landlocked, stagnant both in business and arts, and dying a s l o w death. Rome has a great medical presence - in Redmond Regional and Floyd but other than that and the private colleges, Berry and Shorter, there is nothing. Home values are dismal, schools are rough, and overall it is one small depressing place.

Move to an area where you have better proximity to I75.

Hometown syndrome strikes again. Rome is a great place to live! I will never leave. Of course, I grew up in the Atlanta area...

Yeah I'm not into Rome either, but out of all the cities in NW GA, it is the largest.

To the individuals who keep mentioning Cartersville, granted it is just barely located inside northwest Georgia, it is kind of a mix between the rest of metro Atlanta and the rest of northwest Georgia. If the economy ever picks back up, it's most likely that "sprawl" will finally make its way up to connect with the "sprawl" of Cartersville. They're not that far apart to begin with, maybe seven or so miles between the south side of Cartersville and the Bartow/Cobb line where the development seems to drop off a bit.

Even then, Bartow is growing at a moderate rate and is probably more desirable for most than Rome/Floyd County, or the rest of northwest Georgia.

Hello -- here are my thoughts on the subject. Rome is a very attractive town with many beautiful older homes. I've lived there twice -- as a college student and several years later as an adult. Here's the rub -- there is no direct limited access to the interestate. I saw where some other posters mentioned this and it has, indeed, always been the roadblock to much growth and success. At one time in the 90s a new highway to Memphis (running through or close to Rome) was proposed, died out, brought up again and died a hard death again.

I loved living in Rome when I was there and have many fond memories of it. Indeed, I love the entire Northwest Georgia area. If I were coming into this area with no ties at all, I would explore either the Chattanooga end of Northwest Georgia (Ringgold, Chickamauga) or the Bartow end (Cartersville).

I lived in Rome for 10 years before moving to the metro Atlanta area where I lived for 25+ years. I know Rome - like the back of my hand - and maybe it's because I don't own property there that I can say... don't move to Rome.

A connector to I-75 is being built as we speak, if I am not mistaken. Harbin clinic makes Rome desirable for medical care. Floyd medical has excellent pediatric and neonate facilities and Redmond has excellent cardiac, oncology, and surgical care. As far as medical providers, you'd be hard pressed to not find what you need in Rome. I can tell you first hand we have some truly excellent surgeons and cardiologist. Rome has wonderful opportunities for education in Berry, Shorter, Georgia Highlands, and Coosa Valley. Also we have a fantastic private grammar school in Darlington. However, I feel we are lacking in entertainment. The 3 movie theaters are all privately owned by the same person. We have the braves. We have a pitiful excuse for a mall. There are many restaurants, but they get old after a while. We do have a vibrant history with wonderful historic homes. Our broad street is one of the nicest I have seen, with unique restaurants and shops. While the rumors continue to circulate about best buy, target, publix, ext... its hard to say with the economy like it is. Regardless, I love living here. I live in the city and can get anything I need and be back home in less than 20 minutes regardless of time of day. I would definitely recommend Rome to retire to. I would not recommend Rome to people in the 20's looking for a night life. Because, although it has improved recently with the addition of mcrobies and 333, we are lacking in evening entertainment. Since I would much rather spend time with my family, than "get my groove on", this 20-something nurse loves Rome and would have to have a darn good reason to move elsewhere.

I always thought Rome ws such a nice place. Really surprising to hear all the negative comments. I think it has more to offer than NW GA. Plus, if you are that close to the GA/TN line why not just move to TN and avoid the state taxes? NW GA's landscape is pretty but not just any one would want to live there. I'm sorry but I would say Rome. Beautiful place.
