As a former Georgia Peach myself, I would like to say that I LOVE the state! My mom's family comes from the Rome/Lindale area and I have family in Columbus, Tallapoosa, Cartersville, Marietta, and others... My "Paw Paw" farmed and was also a supervisor in the textile mill in Lindale. I have such fond memories of picking and eating peaches in his orchards and also roasting peanuts in the fireplace at my grandparents' house. The good ole' days....

I moved to georgia from Florida and I agree..The people couldnt be nicer.....and the manners and such from the kids in the area is very impressive. I have seen wonderful improvements in my own child as far as manners. I miss the beach life but thats what vacations were made for....I'm not sure how to meet good christian men in these rural areas but we'll see what happens. Most men in their thirties or forties are already married from what I have seen. Perhaps Augusta is the best place to meet successful nice Christian men. I don't know. Its the nearest large city. Regardless....I still love small towns in georgia..Great people!

We moved here from Rochester NY in October.I love the slower life style, the peace and quiet(live in Kennesaw) weather, the low crime rate, the weather, the great schools, the weather, the feeling of being close to stores but far enough that I don't snack all day,the weather,I love that I have a forest right outside my door, the people, Oh by the way did I mention the weather LOLEven though it was winter and Georgia had some snow it was awesome compared to the slip and slide of NY.When you get settled go on mapquest or set your GPS cause there is just so much to see and do and alot of cost little or nothing. From what I can tell Georgia Loves people.

Default Making the move south...

Hello Everyone,

I'm considering a job offer in the Griffin area; however it will require regular commutes to Macon. So, for ease of commute I'm looking for housing at the mid way point between the two cities. I welcome a small town but would like a subdivision setting to share amenities i.e. pool, tennis, park, etc. I'm looking in the high 200,000's - mid 300,000's... any suggestions? I do need a suite for my mother (perhaps a basement) and senior activities for her in the area as well. While I expect a return to college to do graduate work, I have no children at home so schools are not an issue. I welcome your comments.

Well I finally made it out to work in my northern yard today for the first time it was nice maybe 55 and little wind. Usually it has been windy as heck or raining if it is in the 50's. I know home has been warm and nice, don't tell me about it, it hurts too much. I miss it so.

Although I am not sure about the availability of the "subdivision-amenity" phenomenon in these smaller towns, here goes....

I think Barnesville and Thomaston have the small-town charm while splitting the distance between Griffin and Macon. Griffin itself has its strong points, but these smaller towns do not seem to be touched by the inner-city problems that Griffin often deals with. I do think that that the "subdivision shared-amenity" thing is a lot more available in the Griffin area, however.

A few of the restored, old buildings of downtown Barnesville and Thomaston are wonderful to me. These towns have Mayberry-style friendliness and charm yet are within 1 hour of urban amenities like Macon museums and Atlanta symphony concerts.

Another consideration would be Forsyth, with its quick interstate access, while still preserving the rural and small-town atmosphere. Monroe County is growing and certainly has its "sweet spots" if you are willing to take the time to search for them. One of these would be Juliette, which is an extremely small town---I would call it more of a hamlet. But it has haunting charm, if you saw "Fried Green Tomatoes" with Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy, you would know that this town was its own character in this film and is extremely hard to reproduce in other places.
