We're here and lovin' it!
Hey! Just wanted to post a quick note as I am still very busy trying to finish the unpacking and getting organized. We are here!!!! Finally! So far, so GREAT. We have been here (Walker County) exactly one month and absolutely love it. We have been spending a lot of time in LaFayette and I have to tell you guys.....everyone is just so nice. I have said this over and over but I promise it's true. I finally met one rude person at a drive-thru. She was the only one I have run into. I can't blame her though because you could not pay me enough to have her job. So, I let that slide. Anyway, the beauty of the land here is just fantastic. People are great. Utilities are really inexpensive (about 1/2 what we paid in NC). The girls have met some really nice kids here and I think are actually excited about school starting. And the view....did I mention that? Whew! The view from just about anywhere in Walker County is just heavenly. Love it and thrilled to be here. Thanks so much for all of the help! Take care and will talk to ya'll soon!

Grew up in Spalding County and Meriwether County, both neighbors. In my day, Pike County was considered very rural and sort of backward (as if we had room to talk) but now I believe it is very well run and has a good school system. I know a lot of people in Griffin have chosen to move to Pike to get a little more country feel and away from some of the ills in Spalding, so the area has had some respectable growth.
Don't have first hand knowledge, other than I don't think the people I am familiar with from Griffin would have moved into Pike if they thought there was something very negative about the schools there.

I saw this on the Canada forum and was appalled. I guess this guy thinks we are all ignorant low class southerners! I think not!

Marietta or Savannah are the most diverse
Savannah:
New houses would start at $150,000
military town with a lot of biracial families
Some Schools have problems some are among the best in the state
Jobs: SEDA
Creative Coast
Crime: Some areas are safer than others

I second bgnzsavanh's thoughts.
Marietta--
Homes in safe/stable areas probably run from the low $200,000/Smrna/west Marietta. East Cobb has some of the best schools in the state, less diverse and IIRC if you are persistent you can still find older homes from the lower $300,000.
Pop over to the Atlanta forum for more FYI.
