Default Does anyone know Demorest Ga??

I meant it to read Demorest in the other thread. Sorry.

Looks like it might have potential. What say you? Cenus.gov reveals quite bit. How is the town? Is it down home and redneck or Southern? Southern would be mighty fine.

Is there cable available in the area? Know the name of the cable company? How about hospitals? Shopping? Supermarkets? Any Asian grocery stores in the area? Any Synagogues?

Thank you in advance for some help.

The research continues!

Don't know if you got any feedback on your Demorest questions. I live nearby, in White County, and love the small town of Demorest. I would classify it as a college town. It's home to Piedmont College, a very highly rated four-year private college, so the town exhibits the usual sort of bohemian ambiance. Demorest is an old town, and still contains some beautiful old homes. In the early 1900's is was considered a vacation spot for folks from Atlanta and south, because of its temperant summer weather, and because it was on the rail line to Tallulah Gorge (in Rabun County), which is second only to Grand Canyon in depth. Demorest is located in Habersham County, and the town of Cornelia is the county seat. Habersham County has for the last 20-25 years been considered nationally in the top five areas for excellence in almost any category you could name.

Cornelia is a rather large town (new Lowe's and older, but nice, Wal-Mart). It even has a very nice K-Mart. It retains more of a country atmosphere than Demorest. Another very nice town in Habersham County, and very close to Demorest, is Clarkesville. Lots of sophistication for this area, great dining, antiques, housing, etc.

To sum up, I'd classify Demorest as gracefully Southern, Cornelia as red-neck Southern, and Clarkesville as a wonderful old Southern lady. With Demorest almost smack in between, you can have it all. There is a small but good hospital in Demorest, and cable and high speed interest is great. No Asian groceries that I know of in whole area, altho some good (if I'm to be considered a judge here) Asian restaurants. The closest synagogue would probably be Athens (approx 50 mi) or Atlanta (80 mi).

If I didn't have an aging parent next door to me in White County, I probably would have already moved to Habersham County!

Hope this helps.

Smile Demorest,Ga.

Thank you Mtma for the kind words regarding Demorest.
Have been researching the Habersham co. area and your input is most helpful. My husband and I just returned from a scouting trip into North Georgia in search of a retirement location. Both of us liked what we saw aroung Clarkesville. We have always lived in a rural/farm community and intend to continue in that lifestyle. Do you have any suggestions as to where to stay during our next trip? I'd like to get to know the area and the people better.
Thanks again, PatD

We are also considering Demorest area; it is on our short list for retirement. We are planning on a visit in November. I would very much like to hear more about your impression of the area, if you wouldn't mind.

Steve,
This was our second trip this year in search of a less conjested area(we live in north central florida below Ocala). We've looked on both sides of the Georgia/South Carolina line and like the foothills the best yet. Our plans are to return in October for a closer look. I like what we've seen and really like the people.
Good luck in your search,
PatD

Ive only been to Cornelia/Demorest once but it seemed like a nice little North Georgia town. I think the two towns are bordering each other. Went to a really cool little cactus nursery there. I did see an Asian market close to DT Cornelia, but its been several years ago so I dont know if its still there. Plenty of little Mexican tiendas though and Im sure you can find some Asian markets in Gainesville, maybe a half hour away.

I live and love in Demorest. It is a small town full of heart. Everyone I know from here loves where they reside and I have long believed that it is a diiferent atmosphere that sets this community apart. It has great things to offer for both young and old. Our favorite spot is this cute pet shop off 441 called Pets Gone Wild if you met their employees and owners you will begin to find the character that I have grow to love in my community.
