Default Moultrie, Tale of Two Cities (Photos)

I recently revisited Moultrie, Ga and while taking a photo tour was struck by the contrast between two areas of town (well actually three). I decided to divide them into two groups and show them for you. By the way, this sort of thing is not really unique to Moultrie. Most South Georgia towns it's size are similar.

The Distinguished Side:

O.K. That's all for now. Part II. The Other Side of the Tracks. coming up next.

Funny, you took a picture of my in-laws house. You are correct, these are the doctors, lawyers, dentist's, and people that work outside of Colquitt County. Most of the homes you took a picutre of were either near downtown or going towards Thomasville. The county is pretty poor, a lot of old homes and trailers.

You're right S. Ga Girl. Actually there were a couple more neighborhoods with even more houses just as impressive as most of those I took. I just ran out of time. Also, I didn't get out into the county much just mostly stayed in or close to town.

Now, heres as promised some of the Other Side of the Tracks.

One positive note though. Many of these really run down houses are quickly being demolished and replaced with much nicer affordable housing.

You are correct. These houses use to line up where the post office is now. The county started tearing down these houses several years ago. This side of town is where most of the crime is and you can see why. No family I have lives on this side of town. I still love Moultrie and can't wait to move back. Like I said there's not a lot of work and that's why my husband and
I live up here in Atlanta.

I think this truly captures what most American cities and towns are like. I know I live in rural NC and just down the road a few houses that are 2/3 story and HUGE have been put up near the rundown houses, or just the ones that have been there a long time.

Funny though - that this is on 2 different sides of town, which you can see ALL over the country!

Once a year Moultrie host a huge agricultural exposition ; the largest in the world I think. One year a former boss of mind guided some out of state visitors that had been there several times before. They commented that while they were impressed by the expo they did not care much for the city. The expo is on a side of town that's mostly hamburger joints, car lots and some not so nice residential neighborhoods (alot of trailer parks).

My boss took them to the side of town that's really nice (it's out of the way from the expo and most visitors don't see it). They were amazed that after visiting for so many years they had no idea all that existed in Moultrie.

Looks like a nice town with some nice houses. What's a nice 5BR brick colonial go for there?
