Why on earth do you people allow these murderous acts to take place??? Its bad enough that you hold them, but theyre gaining in popularity and people are encouraging others to attend. You should take pride in your native species and learn about them and respect them rather than eradicate them and teach others that its ok to round up snakes and abuse them and hack them up. If youd like to see these barbaric/senseless/murderous acts cease to exist, write your local authorities. Enough is enough!
![]() Snakes are detrimental in controlling the disease-spreading rodent population. Snakes deserve the right to share this earth with us, just like every other creature. Remember, it is YOU who invaded THEIR territory. Killing them for pleasure is abhorrible! 2008 Claxton Rattlesnake Roundup |

That is sad...
But they are at least only killing a few(which isn't even really worth it).. Unlike right now in Canada they are slaying over 98% of baby seals for fur. |

Hi Steve-o. I carefully examined the property before I purchased it and there were no snake pits.
There is no rattlesnake listed on my deed nor on my mortgage note. I have leased space to no serpant or any of it's relatives. Any rattle snake on my land is trespassing and if such trespasser becomes a nuisance I will prosecute such by any means available to me.![]() I realize you do not respond well to sarcasim, but sadly I still enjoy it and at the moment it is all about me. You are in Chicagoland and unable to prevent me from taking pleasure at your expense. (see my title if you have doubts about my intentions)I can live fine with snakes, mosquitoes, and other nasties that make life unpleasant. I do not feel the need to go search them out. I have no problem with those that do, however, as long as their activites do not appear to cause any significant impact on the overall survivability of the species. I can vouch that over the last 40 years there has been little to no effect on the rattlesnake population in the US as a result of the multitude of roundups each year. All it seems to do is motivate the snakes to avoid the locations where people are at looking for them. It is a win-win. The people think they got rid of the snakes and the snakes now know where to avoid so they are not inconvienced by the people. Some of us even get a good meal out of the whole thing. As to murdeous....now we don't consider people dying of snakebit murderous because we feel the snake is only acting to protect itself. The people at the roundups claim they wish to reduce the snake populations in areas of human population. They don't drive hundreds of miles away to do these roundups, so I tend to believe them. That would mean they are also acting to protect themselves from a perceived threat. So if we can excuse a snake on those grounds when the snake presumably cannot reason out their motivations, why shouldn't we give people the same leeway when they can? |

Steve,
You need to come down to the event before you pass judgement from the frozen tundra of Chicagoland. In the past, 30 years ago the snakes were rounded up and killed. Today, most of the snakes are caught and farmed, or in other words "milked" Don't know how familiar you are with Eastern Diamondbacks, but they can be compared to the Mamba "lite" of America. One bite can prove deadly or amputation. The only issue is a Diamond back can bite not once but stike multiple times, faster than horizontal snow falls in Chicago. If it wasn't for farming / milking, the mortality rate would rise since there would not be anti-venom, as you need the venom for anti-venom. Also, if you have been to a snake farm you would find that the pro's, and trust me these folks are pro's, teach folks about the benefits and hazards of venomous snakes, they don't chop them up and play games with them. If you want to play a game with an Eastern, you WILL lose. Diamondbacks, Blacks, and even Copperheads (in mostly moist areas) may travel from the woods to your house or garage to find some place to cuddle. If things in Chicago were not frozen over 9 months out of the year, you might even see a snake downtown sliding around, just like you can in Atanta. Welcome to the South, where there are many bugs and critters around.

I believe you mean they are "instrumental" in controlling the rodent population- your current statement would mean that it would be good to get rid of the snakes.........

They do in fact drive out into the boonies to collect rattlesnakes. I posted something similar on the TX boards, where you can visit the link and find the gentleman who drives way out into the country just to raid and pillage the dens.
If you find them in your yard, remove them, plain and simple. Snakes are not the trespassers, homeowners who raze THEIR (snakes) homes are. I find it ironic that those same people who feel the need to kill them do so only out of fear or lack of knowledge (or both). What these folks do is cruel and unnecessary. Snakes arent out to get you. Snakes want nothing to do with you. If one ends up in your yard, its probably just passing through. They dont set up shop, per se, just to ambush any human that wanders through. Theyre no different than, say, stray cats. Theyre just looking for food and trying to survive. |

So, you are telling me that in the enlightened city of Chicago no stray cats are ever killed? You just ship them to Springfield or something? I will grant I have never heard of a cat roundup, but that may just be because Budweiser has already showed up how hard it is to herd cats. |
