I am planning on moving to Lake Oconee this summer from PA. I have an 11 y/o son and would appreciate any feedback about schools and activities for children his age.

I live at Lake Oconee. Are you moving into one of the gated communities? School wise, it's a little tougher. Public school in Greene County is in a state of change. An announcement just appeared in local paper that all schools will be reorganized into gender based classes. While I think that's a good thing, it will mean a period of adjustment. There are a few private schools in the area, including one run by the Episcopal church, which currently goes thru grade 4 and a new charter school. The charter school is also just a couple of grades with expansion planned.

As far as summer activities for an 11 year old, gated communities offer swim and golf programs. There's horseback riding and abundant fishing that doesn't require gated community. But also keep in mind that it's much hotter here than in PA!

There is a new facility called FirstHand craft center in Greensboro,
they're offering classes in ceramics and other art mediums this summer for kids and adults.
