Ad Valorem tax is BS. It's should be outlawed since you are being taxed more then once on something you only purchased once :not:

We didn't have it in La. (except in Orleans Parish)

Of course it's BS... and paying a tax on the same thing more than once is nothing new. When you buy a new car you pay sales tax on it. When you sell it the new owner pays sales tax, and the new owner, the new owner etc etc etc.

Or how about property tax? Do you really think you own those 40 acres ?? Oh yeah....see how long you continue to own them if you don't pay your property taxes. It's not often considered but in this country you only "OWN" property as long as you pay the taxes...that's not the case everywhere in the world but the concept is so entrenched here we never consider otherwise.

when I moved to fla 15 years ago I had to pay a "impact fee of $275. They said it was to keep people from registering there cars here because the ins was cheaper. A couple of years later there was some kind of class action and the impact fee was ruled illegal. It was a nice surprise to get the refund.
We will be getting a new car when we move to altanta so now I will keep this in mind when chosing the new car.

I think for leased vehicles you pay the same. The percentage depends on what county you live in and is applied to 40% of the assessed value. You can estimate your ad valorem at http://www.etax.dor.ga.gov/ptd/cds/mvman/search.shtml (broken link)

Thank you. I found that I will pay about $11.00 for one car and over $250.00 for my leased car.

Actually, no. In Georgia there is no tax on a re-sold car unless it is bought at a dealer. If from a private party, NO TAX!

Yet another thing cheaper than California. In CA, full boat 8.25% no matter what.
