Please remember...most people will complain rather than say something positive. They may not be happy living anywhere else! Georgia is a beautiful state with friendly, nice people. Noone says it's perfect....but to me, it's close!

We are in Savannah now. Chatham county schools are hit or miss. The majority aren't great but there are a few good ones. Effingham county schools are really good though. The cost of living here is slightly more expensive than muscogee but the property taxes seem the same (less than in the North). As far as insurance, our auto and homeowners are about the same.

Pine Mountain, Hamilton, Waverly Hall and West Point. These are all small towns, but they are close to Columbus.

I would highly recommend Marietta as a place to move. I would also recommend the kennesaw, acworth and powder springs area in addition to marietta. I now live in columbus. I can not wait to move back to marietta! It is a great place to raise kids because you are so close to the culture of atlanta, and the mountains of north Ga. The schools in cobb county are also very good. Kennesaw is full of history and near the mountain is a beautiful place to live.
I would not recommend Columbus georgia as a place to move. The public education system here is severely lacking which is why almost everyone i know opts for private schools over public. Columbus is way behind on culture as well in my opinion. Shopping, food, and entertainment are lacking. (i think someone mentioned having the 2nd largest sams and superwalmart as an accomplishment.) I find myself returning to atlanta at almost every chance i can. Its a neat place to visit, full of history but pretty boring to live in.

Watkinsville is an excellent place to raise kids and very family oriented. We moved here a year and a half ago on a temporary basis for my company. After experiencing what the area had to offer, I declined my next assignment with the company. I will raise my kids in Watkinsville.

bellacelica, I would not move to Columbus hoping it's like the Atlanta area. I moved to Columbus because it's not like the Atlanta area. My idea of fun and your idea of fun must be different and I respect that. I work in Atlanta and believe me they make a big deal about new Wal-Marts, Coscos and Sam's being built up there also. The public school system here is not as bad as you would make it out to be. We have some fine schools here, some the best in the state. Are you going to tell me that all of the schools in Cobb county are the best in the state. I would find that hard to believe, because the Columbus High, North Side High, Britt David, Waddell, Matthews and Blackmon Road just to name a few are ranked at the top of the heap of the public schools in the state of Georgia. Do we have some under performing schools, of course we do, who doesn't? I graduated from one of those under performing schools and guess what; I'm an Electrical Engineer, go figure. As for culture, what are you looking for? I must admit Wrestle Mania don't come here often, but who cares, there are plays at the Springer Opera House, concerts at the River Center, displays at the museums and sports and music events at the Civic Center. What are you looking for? I have lived in several large cities, some whose culture surpasses Atlanta and I know that Columbus is way ahead of many cities of its size in the United States and GA when it comes to culture or. I will not trade Columbus in for Atlanta or any of its suburbs. I'll take my my slow paced, fast when I want it to be, town. I don't believe anyone should live where they are not happy, life is to short for that. I would either make the best of where I am or find my happiness somewhere else, but to live here and be miserable, that's not good. I have lived in some places where the highlight of the day was watching the tumbleweed, but I made the best of it and thoroughly enjoyed myself, that's life. I have never purposely gone to Atlanta to shop for anything. I have been able to find all I need here in Columbus, we have a verity of places that sell all kinds of foods, clothing and furniture. Please get out and enjoy what the city has to offer. Try Mid Town, Downtown and the South Side, you might enjoy the cultures and the flavors. The culture south of Manchester Expressway is amazing, try it you might like it. We have Cuban, Soul Food, Indian, Thai, Korean, Vegetarian, West Indian, Mexican and other restaurants and stores that you might not be aware of, give it a try. Is Columbus for everyone? Of course it's not.

We moved from Hoschton Ga. 5 months ago for a change of pace to Florida. The Braselton, Hoschton area in Ga. has a lot of new subdivisions for good money. River Plantations, Traditions. We did not attend the Jackson county schools. Found Jefferson City schools to be the best. I am disapointed with the Florida schools, housing and such. Having second thoughts to moving back, maybe Gwinnett county. You can't beat the restaurants and my favorite malls, Ga. mall and Lenox Square.

The bottom line is Georgia housing is beautiful, affordable and cost of living is reasonable. Florida is extremely overpriced and very unstable.
