Thanks girl! Honestly, I guess since I have grown up here, I still remember all the good things you were talking about, and do not think Albany is that bad UNTIL I go elsewhere and return! However, this will always be my childhood home (apparently I haven't grown up yet!) and it really was a wonderful place to grow up and be a child! Trick or treating until after dark, swimming in Radium Springs, Jimmys Hotdogs, playing outside until the street lights came on, going to the elks to swim, walking to school with your friends, skating every friday and saturday night, going to the mall on saturdays, etc... etc.... etc..... Boy, things really are different here now and I wish people could experience how it was in mine and your childhood here! Really was the "good life" city then! A lot of the differences come from political, socio-economic etc... reasons that I am not EVEN going to get into.

Thanks for the blast from the past memories girl!

Use these plastic ziplocs to clean out your clutter drawers in your kitchen, bathroom or anywhere esle...throw the crap out and only keep what you need...all the little cluttery things go into the ziplocs and then put them all together in a rubber maid container...keep stuff from getting lost...especially little stuff, like what is in your clutter drawers. The plastic ziplocs are great for all your tiny items you want to keep together. If for anyreason you are wavering whether to keep something when packing...just get rid of it...I cant tell you how many times I decided to bring things on moves when I had doubts about whether to keep them, only just to throw them away when we got to our new place. Many, many times. Think of moving inyour new place as a chance to start over...so anything that is worn out...just get rid of...and start fresh. Sorry, couldnt help myself on the advice...even when you didnt ask for it!

Good for you being able to get out while you still have plenty of living to do.
Hmmm...my sons' 13 metric tons of Lego come to mind, here.

Does anybody remember Jimmy's Hotdogs or Little Red Hotdog House? Jimmy's
was/is my favorite hotdogs anywhere. I remember being 5 years old(i'm 27 now) and standing in line and all the little old black ladies were no nice to me and my brother and mom. I grew up in Putney and Radium Springs. I used to go swimming at the springs behind the casino. I was friends with the family that co-owned the casino and would get in free. I lived 2 block from there on Cherry Laurel lane. I moved in the summer of 93 to Florida, narrowly avoiding the great flood that completely covered my old house.

I really miss Albany alot. Don't have any personal experience with the problems of today, but in the late 80's and early 90's, it was fun. I was definately the minority, since being im white, but I was too young to understand those types of things going on today in Albany regarding race and bad attitudes. Oh yeah, I lived on 2nd Ave. off of Slappey Blvd and my brother went to Monroe for a little while. I think he graduated at Darsey or something like that?(can't remember the name). Right now I have a cousin and second cousin that live off 2nd right beside the limesink.

Well, now i'm in Atlanta, temporarily in Henry county, after 13 years of love/hate with Florida. yeah I made some great friends and have family(all on my mom's side) that live in the gulf coast area.(Panama City/Pensacola). I'm glad to be back in Georgia even though traffic is really bad in Atlanta.

It really feels good to look back and think about the good times I had in Albany and Lake Blackshear in Cordele.

hey I posted on a thread about hotdogs in the atlanta forum. I did mention Jimmy's. Although now they have another place called "hotdog king"...right at the end of slappey before you get on newton rd to head out by the airport...it is at the end of that gas station/convenience store. The one downtown is still there, and locals will tell you that it is still the best.

Yeah..it is easy for me to conjure of memories of my childhood, because my girls are 7 yrs old....and it always takes me back to what I remember when I was their age....and surprisingly enough...I remember ALOT. Even though I could think of a ton of negative things...refreshingly it is the positive ones that stand out to me. And it is because I am here in a place that is SO not like my childhood...people's attitudes, lack of any kind of commitment to a faith...it just makes me appreciate where I did come from....warts and all...and it is part of who I am today...and I think I am good person who has their priorities in a decent order...and I feel that under the best circumstances I am raising my girls based on what I was taught as a child in Albany, GA. Not the negative stuff...but the positive. My girls dont really notice skin color, they are so innocent still. It makes me proud to have that, you know?

I grew up in Birmingham, attending integrated schools, and still have great memories of our neighborhood there (Roebuck/Huffman). I am trying to shield my kids and/or teach them how to deal with the way Albany is, but am really hoping to just get them out of here soon. I'm hoping my loathing of the town doesn't rub off on them. Much.

I think...most of us in the south that grew up with the prejudice and have gotten out and seen that it doesnt have to be that way.

I have taken much care in changing what comes out of my mouth. Especially around my kids. I try to never make any judgemental comments around them or just in general. It is a life changing thing when you choose not to make those type comments. Instead, you offer objective type observances. It makes a difference...my girls only until maybe they 6, that they started asking about skin color.

You have a 13 yr old...so obviously he will be much more savvy to what goes on around him. I would tell him...things are different there, but are not that way in other places. Just follow the church influence...that's what you want to encourage....acceptance, even when it is difficult, empathy, and a sense of right and wrong. I always say to my girls....what do you think Jesus would do? Sorry...dont mean to be preachy...but I am just merely giving an example. You are a few yrs ahead of me in raising your kid(s) so you probably already know all this...especially if you have had similiar experiences as a southerner. God bless you trying to go against the current there...I know it has to be a challenge.

2nd Ave is one of those tree canapied streets I was talking about....real pretty older homes back in there close to the limesink. Remember the fireworks there?? I went a few times. Were you born in '72? If so my sister was your age...she went to merry acres and then Westover...she was a bit of a wild child during her time there.

And Radium springs...very pretty older neighborhoods too. I went to Riverview academy when it still existed and more than half of my graduating class was from across the river in radium springs. It really was quite a gem. I havent been back there in a while. You were quite lucky missing that flood...it was quite devastating. I remember that summer I was supposed to be attending my 10 yr reunion....and they cancelled it because of the flood. I havent lived in Albany since 1986ish.

My great grandmother lived outside Cordele in Arabi....it is like on the way to the lake. It is good to know there were some good childhood memories in Albany.

I'm 27. My brother is 34. Doublegate is really nice. Huge homes. My mom was a nurse back then and all the doctors she worked for all lived in Doublegate. And yes, I remember the fireworks. My mom would take me almost every year.

Sorry...I noticed the age after I posted...yes Doublegate was primo. And St Andrews too. Most of the drs and lawyers sent their kids to Deerfield windsor, too. Did your mom work for Phoebe or Palmyra? I have alot of girlfriends who are nurses and worked at Phoebe....I bet your mom, probably knew a few of my friends.

I met a girl up in Atlanta and we both find out we lived in Albany growing up...and her dad was a neurosurgeon, her mom a nurse, and they lived in Doublegate, haha. She is the sweetest person, very down to earth.
