Some people on here have asked about crime in various cities throughout Georgia.. and others have tried to assert that certain cities are "safer" or more "violent" than others. I have been doing a little bit of research on the subject to see where the truth lies...but have hit a bit of a stumbling block. YOu see..certain cities.. well most notably one, in the state is not listed at all on the FBI Uniform Crime Report.. it's pretty much the clearinghouse for national statistics on crime at local, state, and national levels..
Here is the most recent report with full data... which includes all crime for 2006 in Georgia cities.. you will see Atlanta is there, so is Athens, Macon, Columbus, Albany, and Savannah.. but not Augusta.. supposedly the second largest city in Georgia. So why would the second largest city in Georgia not report their crime stats to the FBI? What are they hiding? Are the results provided on the local sherrif's website reliable numbers if they are not reported to the FBI as part of the Uniform Crime Report? FBI Uniform Crime Report for Georgia Cities for the Year 2006: Table 8 (Georgia) - Crime in the United States 2006 try to find Augusta..it's not there.. but just about every other city in Georgia is..so what's there to hide Augusta?? |

The reason why Augusta's numbers are not included is because it would be inaccurate. Part of the counties crimes would go to Blythe and Hephzibah but their crimes get lumped in with Augusta's because their in the same county and most of the county is consolidated. You failed to however post the metro numbers and yes Augusta's metro is listed. You know what, your hatred is very funny. LOL It's like every post someone makes about Augusta you have to chime in. You are the main reason Augusta needs it's own forum. Half of them would be your posts. LOL

Augusta can claim one title loud and Clear: "Rape Capital of Georgia"
In 2006 , according to the Augusta/Richmond County Sheriff's Department , there were 107 forcible rapes in "The Garden City".. Now Atlanta had an overall higher number of rapes of 171... but when adjusted for population the rate in Augusta is much higher. The jurisdiction population covered by Augusta's crime stats is 190,000 ..For Atlanta it's 486,000.. crunch the numbers and you get 56 rapes per 100,000 ppl in Augusta.. for the same year, based on population, there were 35 rapes in Atlanta per 100,000 ppl. Savannah: 30 rapes per 100,000 ppl Savannah registered 65 rapes in 2006, and its police jurisdictional population is larger than Augusta's at 213,000... but yet that's 42 fewer rape than Augusta with a police jurisdictional population of 190,000. So what's up with all of the rapes in Augusta?? BTW, Columbus had the lowest rate of any metro area in Georgia of 10 rapes per 100,000 ppl. In 2007 The Augusta sheriff's department reported 99 forcible rapes.. a slight decrease from the previous year.. but still the highest rate for any major city in Georgia. |

Blythe and Hephzibah have nothing to do with it.. for one thing the population in those municipalities is negligible...and for another we are talking about police jurisdictions, not necessarily city jurisdictions.. for example the Savannah-Chatham metro police department covers the city of savannah and the unincorporated areas of Chatham County..and there are several other municipalities in Chatham county like Thunderbolt, Garden City, Port Wentworth.. yet Savannah is still ablr to report their numbers.
Athens is a consolidated city/county like Augusta.. it also has anothyer municipality (Winterville)..similar in size to Hephzibah.. and somehow Athens is still able to calculate their numbers and report them to the FBI.; |

where i live they tweak the stats for crimes 1/3 of the normal average.
it was on a local editorial confrontation with tv station editor and chief of police a few years ago. very sad. tweaking of stats by government agencies is pervasive in our society. the constant pressure to show good performance at least on paper. |

Huckleberry:The local news in Augusta.. most notably the weekly independent paper The Metro Spirit.. alluded to the same thing as to why Augusta did not report their stats as part of The Uniform FBI Crime Report.. when just about every other city in Georgia does. This should be very worrisome to the people in Augusta.. what are the true numbers? are they being "tweaked" to make them sound better than they are? Apparantly.. putting them in the FBI UCR opens them up to scrutiny over there validity.

The FBI has the number for Richmond County or else they wouldn't have been able to do the MSA totals. You can theorize all you want, but the fact remains they have their numbers. Augusta's sherrif's department reports the whole county and not the cities.
Also while you're posting about rapes, lets not forget all of the other violent crimes. And lets not also forget that Augusta still has the lowest overall violent crime out of the 5 major metros. Murder Rate Augusta = 6 Columbus = 6.8 Atlanta = 7.4 Macon = 7.6 Savannah = 9.9 Robbery Augusta = 162.1 Macon = 175.4 Atlanta = 209.2 Columbus = 222.7 Savannah = 243.5 Aggravated Assault Augusta = 171.7 Columbus = 249.1 Atlanta = 289 Savannah = 292.9 (2005 total) Macon = 306.7 |

PJA, you keep posting these numbers on threads.
Where are they coming from...I know you say the FBI, but I'm the type who doesn't believe second hand information from sources I do not personally know are credible. I'm sure you're the same way. Are you a secret FBI agent man? ![]() thanks |

Well I would like to know how PJA got them from the FBI website considering that Augusta doesn't report their numbers. The website for the Augusta Sheriffs dept does have monthly crime stats.. but one has to wonder how accurate these numbers are since the city opts out of being included in The FBI UNiform Crime Report. Actually I do have a friend who works for the FBI.. and he informed me that certain jurisdictions opt out because they want to tweak their numbers.

Actually you are wrong... The FBI will report MSA numbers.. even if a particular jurisdiction is absent. Some of Atlanta's numbers are missing too.. BUt Augusta is missing alltogether from the UCR.. And the numbers you provided don't show up anywhere that I have looked. and believe me, I have looked all over The FBI website and all of the local police websites.. So if you could provide a link so that these numbers could be verified.. that would be appreciated.
And murder rate = 6?? What does that mean? Are you saying there were 6 murders in one year?? What year? And that certainly doesn't jibe with the numbers provided by the Richmond County Sheriff's dept website which reported 18 murders for 2006 and 25 for 2007... The numbers you keep posting have no context and are rather meaningless. |
