I was considering moving to beautiful Savannah but after all the posts I read about the crime and flooding I think not. It seems to me that Savannah may have very well become the next New Orleans and Atlanta God help them with all the crime I read about. I won't even get into the corrupt Atlanta and possible Savannah Police department(s). Rather I just want to know if Brunswick is any better? Sand Gnats? Flooding? School System? I do realize that every city has problems but I do not want to move to a place where I could be shot or robbed on a daily basis. The Governor of Georgia should be held accountable for what is going on in that State. It's a beautiful State send the criminals to jail and take it back. Easier said than done. Anywho please let me know what you think of Brunswick I would really like to know.

Step back and take a few deep breaths...you make it sound like the Seven Plagues are being visited upon Atlanta and Savannah...I assure you, 'tis not so in either case.
Do you want to know my impression of Brunswick? It's a pleasant enough place, with good and bad neighborhoods, a good climate, and things on the whole seem to be on the upswing. If you want small-town GA living with access to shopping and amenities, I'd say it's safe to recommend Brunswick. |

It is all the same. There are good and bad areas in all of those cities. There are good and bad schools within each system. Savannah has both Savannah High and the Savannah Arts Academy, the worst and best high schools in the state. Unless you are involved in Drugs, or go out on your 'significant other' or frequent bad 'hoods.............................. |

Wow. I'm sorry you got a bad impression on Savannah. People tend to over exaggerate how crime and flooding in Savannah are. I work in downtown and have friends who live downtown and I can assure you it is not as bad as some of these people say.
Savannah is a tourist town so venturing downtown will mix you in with a variety of different people from different areas of the state, country or even world and of course there are the locals as well (such as myself). Personally, I've walked by myself downtown at 3 in the morning and couldn't have felt safer if I was walking by a police station. If you change your mind and decide to move here (which I hope you do), you'll more than likely walk and take a tour downtown, look at real estate downtown and realize its out of your price range and end up going to suburbia (Islands, Pooler, Richmond Hill or Rincon) Crime in those areas are pretty much non-existent ...btw, not implying you're poor by any means, just going by what the majority of people end up doing. As far as flooding is concerned, we live on the coast. Most of the city is right at sea level. (with the exception of downtown) It happens! But by no means does it make our beautiful city uninhabitable. Finally, I would like to say Brunswick is a fine town as well. The beaches are beautiful (Jekyll, Sea & Saint Simons Islands). Take a trip to both cities and see for yourself! Don't just go by what a few negative people on the internet have to say. Here are some population stats for you just in case you are interested: Brunswick (City): 16,074 Brunswick (Metro): 100,613 Savannah (City): 127,889 Savannah (Metro): 320,013 (These are 2006 estimates) |

WanderingImport yes you're right. I'm still ready to take a drive down to Georgia and North Carolina. I guess I was so excited about the possibility of finding a "great" place to finally move to I was really disappointed about the crime statistics. After visiting several States to only find disappointment I was considering Italy or France because I'm on my last rope with finding that perfect fit. Lol I was on the edge of my sit with a story about a lad who had guns pointed at his car. I have seen what New Orleans is all about and I just don't have it in me to risk my life like that if indeed Savannah has becaome that way or maybe it always was. Anyway thank you for your advice I will proceed, with much caution, to visit Savannah and Brunswick.

I would definitely choose Savannah. Both places are very nice and yes Savannah has crime but what city doesn't. I'm not sure about Brunswick but I'm sure they have crime too. But since Savannah is bigger there will obviously be more to do. Their downtown is so beautiful and you're close to the ocean and you're close to one my favorite Georgia spots, Tybee Island.

Don't let everything you read freak you out.
I have family and friend in Savannah and Brunswick, I am in Atlanta. I think with all 3 cities it has a lot to do with what area you decide to live in. I am north of Atlanta (Kennesaw) and we live in a great area. I feel very safe. There are parts of Savannah that are wonderful but also areas that I would not want to enter. As far as Brunswick goes, I would prefer to live on St. Simons Island. It is much nicer and safer than Brunswick. |

I lived in Brunswick, Georgia for a year and it was okay, but the sand gnats are terrible. They will drive you crazy. Brunswick is next door to St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island where the cost of living will definitely be higher. I found St. Simons Island to be rather arrogant and quite crowded. Jekyll Island is now charging to go onto the island.
Brunswick is about an hour and fifteen minutes from Jacksonville, Florida, which is convenient when you need better shopping. Since Brunswick sits on I-95, you're not far from a lot of different areas. Unless things have changed since 2000, I found the jobs to be very low-paying in Brunswick for the most part, unless you worked at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center or Georgia Pacific. The hospital was okay, not great, but okay. If you like a smaller town and like being near the ocean, Brunswick is not a bad idea, but don't forget the sand gnats. I'm serious - they're unbelievable. You might want to consider Richmond Hill, Georgia, which is outside of Savannah or maybe consider Kingsland or St. Mary's, which is near the Florida line. |
