I frequent the cities often, except for Savannah and Athens. I believe that on these boards, AUGUSTA is the city COLUMBUS claims it is. It better represents what a city of appx.200,000 would look and feel like.

Jam, you have a lot of great things to say, but it hurts my brain trying to figure out where your sentences stop and start. Punctuation is a good thing. Don't be afraid my friend.

I remember before consolidation in around the mid 90's,the population of the CITY of Augusta was at 45,000 people while the Metro area was almost over 400,000.If Atlanta had not have its sprawling suburbs, that might not be a bad thing for Augusta.Unforturnately unlike Atlanta where the city is still the main economic engine more so than the surrounding areas.Augusta does not have that luxury.People have to go to spead out locations for the same stores and resturants that they left in there own suburb. This not a good sign.Think about it.Downtown Stateboro is more active than Augusta's!!
ANother Example!Warner Robins was in Macons MSA,until it became to big. The definition the government determines as an MSA basically said that the economic engine that drives Warner Robins is DISTINCTLY seperated from those economic engines that drive Macons econmy.North Augusta is already seperate .Atlanta is 134sq miles.Augusta is 306 sq mi.Those people used to be in the county of Richmond not Augusta.
Macon is lucky because there are absolutely no other cities of equall size or larger (other than Atlanta) around. The suburbs of Atlanta are drawing people that work in Atlanta but shop, eat and play in Macon on a weekly/daily basis.Eventually entertaiment, shopping and places to eat will be attracted to a nice downtown area people from as close as Warner Robins but as far as Dublin,Cordele,Americaus and even Albany will come and eventually settle.
Augusta is really only now getting serious about the liveability factor of its downtown. If Augusta people got people to want to live intown and get business to follow fatser. It will work.Augusta needs to become a golf resort town where the rich come up the river and park there yaughts.BE dined in 5 star resturants and hotels. The canals should be like San Antonio or Venice. It should be the GOLFERS PARADISE ALL YEAR AROUND.The streets should be made into wide boulevards with stone edgings. It could be the Monte Carlo of the south.Casinos's would bring all of the world class entertainment.Year around not jus the Masters. There should be a SOUL INSTITUTE named in Honor of James Brown out of a working school of arts dedicated to the advancement of soul music world wide. They could give and award for best new soul Artist worlwide and have artist come to a lavish ceremony.
I got more but none of this will happen before MACON or Savannah any time soon because:
1)The museums, publicfacilities, public arts are in a sad shape.
2)the most anti city people next to Macon's suburbanites.
3)More money leading out to the suburbs than to stay in the city.
4)What is Augusta's idenity?
5)Logistics is not that great. If there was no Savannah yes.
In short, people will eventually move to create an area they have the least resitance to being.People need good schools, low taxes, less crime and a sense of community. Why move to downtown Augusta? In thinking this through more,i am actually lowering Macon on equal with Augusta with a very slight edge because of its proximity to Atlanta. It really depends on if some mass transit link between the two becomes available in the near future. In which case Macon will boom way ahead and fast.
P.S. Macon is in BIBB and Jones county.Warner Robins and Perry are in Houston County.
Lee county is ALBANY
Columbus is in Muscogee county.a small part is in Russel county, but that part is in Alabama which is Phenix CIty ,AL

I thought Savannah was a major city. It is one of america's well known port cities and GA first city. how can you say it isn't one. Every Major City doesn't have to have a large population. It has to have international recognition which Savannah has had since colonial days.

This is very true. Not sure since I'm not the creator of this thread, but I'm thinking they were talking population-wise..possibly? In that case, Augusta & Savannah would be first or second to achieve that goal.
A better, more specific question to this would be, which city in Georgia, aside from Atlanta of course, would be the first to see their metro population reach the 1 million mark?
Not quite sure we'll see that in our lifetimes, but it'd either be Augusta or Savannah.
