Do you know for a fact matrixguy? It would be interesting to see the other airports. I don't know why disgusta just listed savannah's and augusta's as if they're the only airports in georgia besides Atlantas.

Not surprisingly.. Atlanta leads the nation's airports.
SAV (Savannah) is the second busiest passenger airport in Georgia and 89th overall in the nation. No other Georgia city comes close.
Now these are figures from the FAA... their most recent stats are from calendar year 2006... figures from Calendar year 2007 will be released later this year.

Naturally, enplanements in cities like Columbus and Macon are going to be lower because of their proximity to Hartsfield.

One thing should be noted about the rankings of MSA's in Georgia.
when ppl come up with the number that Augusta's MSA has a population of 523,000 ppl.. they are including a very large area.
This number includes the population of Richmond County (which includes the city of Augusta), Columbia County, McDuffie County (which is 30 miles away from Augusta), Burke County (which is an enormous county by area.. the second largest in Georgia), Aiken County (One of the largest counties by area in SC.. stretching over 45 miles), and Edgefield County... They are computing a really big area landwise to arive at the figure of 523,000 ppl (give or take a cpl hundred)
But Savannah gets shortchanged..
when ppl say that metro Savannah has only 320,000 ppl.. they are only counting three counties..Chatham, Effingham, and Byan..
Jasper County and Beaufort County in SC are not factored in,.. even though they are right across the river from downtown Savannah.. (that would be kind of like leaving Aiken County out of Augusta's MSA totals)..
Liberty County, GA is also left out of Savannah's totals.. even though it is the same distance from downtown Savannah as Mcduffie County is to downtown Augusta. So let's take roughly the same land area that Augusta is using to compute its MSA totals and apply them to Savannah and see what we get.
* Note we are including the same number of counties in the total for Savannah that Augusta is doing to arrive at it's number (a total of 6 counties)
and Savannah's MSA number comes out to be over 559,000 ppl

Savannah...over the next 20 years, the population of the coastal counties is supposed to increase by about 52%.

The census doesn't care about how close a city is to a county. Every city in georgia has counties that could be included into ther MSA if thats the case. For a county to be part of a MSA there is a certain criteria to meet. The suburban counties in savannah don't rely on the city of savannah. As much as augusta suburbs rely on the city of augusta. Otherwise those counties would be included into savannah's msa. Those counties are not even included in savannah's CSA yet.

Augusta could add lincoln, mccormick, barnwell, warrenton, wilkes, jefferson, washington, screven, and others.
Our population could topple 700,000. Every city can add counties to boost its population. It has to be strong economic ties for counties to join MSA.

Distance has nothing to do with rather a county is added to a city's MSA.
50% or more of the working people in a certain county has to work in a certain city's (ex. Savannah) MAIN county (ex. Chatham) to be added into a
city's Metro Area population stats.

Its out of Augusta, Columbus and Savannah. Augusta has the head start right now. Columbus is doing everything right to attract new businesses to the area and we have Brac taking place which should add I think like 30,000 people if I remember correctly, and Savannah has the most potential and the location advantage which gives it access to ocean and increases in tourism. The only thing I will say is this, despite having these advantages, Savannah is still 3rd metro in size with all of the advantages it has. I'm not sure why it isn't larger. But larger doesn't always mean better. Some of the best vacations spots are small and maybe that is what Savannah is meant to be.

Speaking of growth, Savannah's metro population added the most last year I believe.
