Any Info on Polk County (GA)
What is the things that people do in Polk County (Cedartown/Rockmart/Aragon/Taylorsville)?
Where do most people from Polk go to for shopping, dining, entertainment, etc? To Dallas/Hiram/Acworth Cartersville/Euharlee, Rome, Douglasville and even West Marietta?
Is Charter the only cable/telephone provider in Polk County? I recently did a check on Comcast.com and it says the services are available in Polk.
Are the local residents friendly?

Brian,
The Rockmart/Cedartown area is hard to explain and really it depends on the type of person you are as to how you'll like it. I've heard people describe these places as everything from "the next Mayberry" to "up and coming" but then also "redneck hell", too. It depends on what you're used to. If you move over here from Birmingham or Otto NC, you may not be turned off by it - come here from L.A. and it might be like a bad reality show.
Rockmart is sleepy. They're trying to revive their downtown area with some slow success. There's a really good Italian restaurant down there across from the police station but I can't remember the name of it. Slowly more shops are re-opening and a Super Walmart is under construction along the drag of Hwy 278 near there as well - and where those go up, more cookie-cutter stuff does follow.
Cedartown has a neat downtown that's along a busy stretch of road. Lots more Mexicans in that area which is either indifferent or bad depending on how you look at that. Hiram is where there's been a huge explosion of chain stores and restaurants in the last 3 years or so, with many more under construction, so that's where many go to shop as well as Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville. For a few higher-end things, people drive east to The Avenues of West Cobb along Dallas Highway.
I work in-between Powder Springs and Hiram. We get most of our customers from these areas, and this is only my personal opinion based on me, the environment I was raised in, and how a view those areas: I could handle living in Hiram or Dallas, though I find that you tend to see tons of the "country stay-at-home moms" crowd around there which can drive you batty if they're having free taco day at a local restaurant (think LOTS of baby strollers...). While overall I like what Rockmart is doing to their town, we get LOTS of rednecks from that area where I work. Doesn't mean everyone out there is, but we see a lot of the snuff chewin', deer huntin', pickup drivin' dudes who talk about stuff I can't print here. As far as Cedartown - some of the same, only in Spanish
Rumor has it that Costco is eyeing property in the Hiram area, by the way. If one of those opens, then any yuppies in the area will show their faces, so look for it. LOL

Hi,
I just saw your post and was hoping you could tell me some more about this town of Cedartowm...Is there a website I could find info on. I am living in Fl with my husband and daughter and we are considering moving to GA. We have heard so much about it that we are now seriously considering it. We have a 11 yr old daughter and want to be able to afford a house(and insurance etc) our house price range would ideally be 150K-250K We would love a small town but still be able to get to the "city" or populated area for shopping etc easily...
Thanks

cedartowngeorgia.com
you could also try romega.com (Rome is about 20 minutes north of Cedartown) and romenews-tribune.com (it links to the cedartown paper I believe).
I would think that for 150-250k you could get quite a nice house....most of this area is still fairly rural, (Removed, and Removed may have listings in Cedartown but they are based in Rome...also check the classified from the Rome News Tribune website, it'll give you an idea of what you can get for your money) I think you're only concern would be locating employment that didn't require some sort of a commute into ATL.

My father grew up in Rockmart during the Depression and played football there. He always spoke highly of the people he knew in Polk County....very hard-working, honest people. (People from all backgrounds.) Seems odd to me to read words from non-residents who refer to small town people as "hicks" and "rednecks"....those are derogatory terms, sir. No offense meant to you, but you might get more responses from people if you weren't so quick to label them.

Polk County is nice, I lived in Bartow County until December '06, and we always saw Polk County plates in Cartersville. Lots of Rockmartans work and shop in Cartersville. I am sure that is changing with the development of Hiram and Douglasville. When we visited Rockmart, we would always find it a bit depressing. The people are very nice, though.

You know, it really gets old when people get so freakin' politically correct that it smells.
I did not say that EVERYONE in that area are "rednecks". I stated (if you bothered to read the post) that I work in the East Paulding area and get customers from that area. Some of them ARE rednecks. No, not good country folks, but spitting, swearing, liquor smelling rednecks who come in the door making you wonder if they're there to buy something, or rob you. No, they do not represent everyone, or even the majority of people out in Polk, but they ARE there. So far I haven't had any customers from Buckhead or Smyrna come in with pickups spilling smoke or ankle bracelets from 20 DUI convictions, but yes, I have from out there. So sorry to you and your Dad, but yes, they exist in that area.
And while I do not live in Rockmart, I have been there multiple times doing work, and checking out the area, interacting with the locals, etc. One again, many are nice country folks, but yes, there ARE rednecks out there, too. The only person who doesn't see that is perhaps Helen Keller. You do not have to live full time in an area to see the makeup of the area. Overall it's not a bad place, but there are elements to be aware of, again especially for people moving into the area from other parts of the country that are different.
Gladly you and your Dad apparently didn't associate with any of them (or even acknowledge their existance) , but folks moving to the area from other parts of the country do need to realize that while it may SEEM like Mayberry, there's a bit of Dukes of Hazard mixed in there as well. Reality vs correctness. Sorry.
