Hi, everyone. My husband and I are thinking of requesting orders to Kings Bay, and we wanted to get some input on the area. My husband is currently stationed at the submarine base in CT, he is originally from about 1 hr outside of Detroit and I am originally from Long Island, NY. I am in nursing school scheduled to graduate May 2009 and he is up for new orders around that time. From what I can find online it looks like the housing is really reasonable in the St. Mary's area compared to what I'm used to, but I am wondering about the quality of the base (work life for my husband compared to fast attacks), starting nursing salaries for new grad (ADN), and open-mindedness/cultural and religious diversity...oh good restaurants would be nice too
. I look forward to any information I can get! Thanks! |

I've lived in St. Marys my whole life. It's a quaint, beautiful town but when it comes to job opportunities and nightlife/social aspects it's severely lacking. Jacksonville is only 30 minutes away and has a good bit of both. Unfortunately most of our restaurants leave ALOT to be desired as well. It's a wonderful place to raise a family and we have good schools. Hope this helps.

Camden County is a great relocation for you. Many submariners come here and either stay or come back to retire. This is a very naval friendly twon with great affordable housing. Great schools too.

Thank you both for the feedback! I am glad to hear that Jacksonville is only about 30minutes away, I thought it was further! My husband and I love going out to eat but are used to having to go out of town for anything good. We are going to try to take a mini-vacation down there to check it out for ourselves this summer. Any advice on where to stay or what to see to get a good feel for the town?

I was stationed in both Groton and more recently Kings Bay from 97-05. Kings Bay is a much nicer base than Groton. Alot of my friends lived in and around Jacksonville and commuted up to Kings Bay. One friend lived on CR210 which is south of Jacksonville almost in St. Augustine. It took him 1 hour door to door.
There are a lot of hospitals in Jax. You will have NO problems finding yourself a job. if you chose GA to live it's not bad at all. VERY affordable. Cost of living is very low. The population on the whole is younger due to the sub base being there....lots of young families. The Camden County schools definately aren't that bad...especially for being in the south.... Just my .02 |
