I'm an African-American female and I'm moving to Georgia in 2007 and Savannah is the top city on my list and I wanted to get more information about it. How is Savannah really, jos, housing, if there is racism and things like.

Well I think that its more a sterotypical thing than racial discrimination,and then again it all about where you go too.I live in Columbus Ga and its great here,i guess because the black and white population is about 50/50,and that we have more of an urban feel than a country feel so we interact with each other more givin us a better understanding of each other and we're around each other so much and You usually never here about it because im white or its because im black.But once i went into a smaller town in a rural area I felt less comfortable from the way the people where acting that was a diffrent race than i was.So I guess it depends ion where you go.Ask yourself is it urban?whats the black and white pop.?I gave I met anyone from there?How do they interact?I hope I helped.

Consider the erstwhile enclaves of Johns Creek or Milton. They're now incorporated cities within the county of Fulton. But it's not enough to be considered part of Fulton County. Residents from Sandy Springs to Alpharetta felt the need to distinguish themselves as North Fulton County. But the burning desire to seceed doesn't stop there. Many of the residents of the above-mentioned cities (as well as many within the Buckhead community) want to drain as much tax monie$ from Fulton as possible and then proceed to incorporate themselves into Milton County.

The reasons for doing this are repeated so often that they no longer have real meaning. But the devastating results are always the same--that is, for those who didn't seceed.

#1 state in black population growth

Black 29.6%
Asian: 2.6% (High concentration in Duluth)
Native American 0.3%
Pacific Islander 0.8%
Hispanic: 6.9%

Now in regard to racism from someone who was raised in the "sticks"

You will find that most of the hill folks do not take kindly to any "outsiders" no matter what color of skin one may have.

In regard to the comments about education (JXU) I must take exception with you and feel rather insulted about your comment

3) Education system is very inferior compared to suburbs. I went to a school in Georgia for undergraduate study. Most of students came from small town can not compete with students came from suburbs.

I know of many small town kids who could not only compete with students from the burbs, but washed the floor with them. Many of your top executives etc are small town folk. John Glenn, Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, to name a few. Heck, I was able to squeek out of American University Summa *** Laude myself. Not to bad for an inferior small town sap.

I mean small town in Georgia, not all states since we are talking about Georgia here. I grew up in small town in MA and I got very good education. Georgia is considered one of worst education states for a reason (not just for its poor urban schools but also for its poor rural schools). Of course, there always is exception. Davidson Magnet School (Richmond County) is in fairly rural area, but it ranked No. 1 in Georgia for SAT.

Two roommates of mine in college came from rural Georgia. White, tall, polite kids. They tried very hard at school (more than I ever did). But both of them flunk out within two quarters. Very sad. On the other hand, Most of other roommates including many African Americans passed with ease at my school because they grew in Atlanta suburbs.

I think part of reasons is that some of Atlanta suburbs school have strong PTA (or booster club). If you go to Simpson elementary (West Norcross) or other wealthy atlanta suburbs schools, you will be amazied some of stuffs they got for kids to learn.

You will find that most of the hill folks do not take kindly to any "outsiders" no matter what color of skin one may have.

Unsaid here, is that the demographic of Georgia's hill folk tends to be White working-class or poorer, and prefer their environs accordingly. Moreover, these areas are growing in population by folks who can't even tolerate suburbia anymore. With such a well-defined and well-understood demographic, skin color is academic.

The key word here is exception. I wouldn't for a second try to diminish anyone's academic success. It can occur, obviously, anywhere. At the same time, academic and professional success comes consistently from suburbia, and exceptional from inner city and rural areas.

Georgia may have the numbers that suggest diversity, but when you look at the statistics of who lives by whom, and who attends school with whom, Georgia is still one of the most segregated states in the country.

I agree...Georgia is one of the most segregated states in the country...but you must look at the reasons why.
Its a two way street my friend....blame can go both ways. There are just as many (IF NOT MORE) blacks who dont like whites as vice versa. The general feel I get from most blacks around here (in middle Georgia) is that they feel they are owed something.... and my view is simple...I dont owe anyone anything..I wont apologize for being white...nor will I apologize for my views. I go to a very diverse church and love my black brothers and sisters. One of our pastors is black. They know how I feel about things and respect me for my stance....and I in turn respect them. Never had a problem and dont think I ever will.

The numbers are final through 2005 year end.
The guess according to the media centers for 2006 is an additional 129K for the 5 county Atlanta area with another 125K statewide at a minimum.
