Default Georgia's Most Polluted Cities

The American Lung Association just released their list of the 25 Most Polluted Cities for Year-round Particulate Matter.
NOt surprisingly metro Atlanta comes in at #6 (all of that traffic is pumping a lot of nasty stuff into the air).. but it's not the only Georgia city to make the top 25 list. Macon comes in at #12 and Augusta makes the list at #21.. these cities scored poorly because of heavy industrial pollution rather than from autos.. Savannah and Columbus did not make the top 25 list.

It looks like EPA is placing Augusta and macon on the non-attainment list for meeting air quality standards. That means peopel in those areas are going to have to get emissions tests for their vehicles and get that decal.. like they do in metro Atlanta. But it can also thwart development because it will place restrictions on any new industry and road road construction.

particulate. schmarticulate
if at some time in the future Columbus makes the non attainment list due to particulate matter it will be no doubt due to the controlled burn at Fort Benning, partly for the preservation of the red cockaded peckerwood. RCW. Mandated by the Feds. And secondly, from coal burning electric generation plants some distance away. Like in outlying metro Atlanta. But it wouldnt hurt to have the state inspection law reinstated. A reasonable standard of non pollution for vehicles. And check vehicles coming in from outlying areas including Alabama and test and reject the clunkers.

OOPS! Did I forget?
One of Columbus' air pollution sampling locations is almost at the back door of the Fort Benning Reservation. And Atlanta would dearly like to have us under non attainment status. Because we were able to capture extra project money they could not get due to non attainment. hmmm. put that in your pipe and smoke it.
