I live near Rincon
and I would be curious to see why you chose it of all the nice communities surrounding Savannah. Rincon, along with Pooler and Richmond Hill is a very nice and mushrooming community. The weather is hot most of the year. Our winters are so mild that I haven't bothered with buying a coat for years now. The few cold days we get are so tolerable compared to the frozen north, that you'd probably feel like you were on vacation. It does not snow.
The schools in Effingham County are great although there is no high school yet. Chatham County schools leave much to be desired. Bryan County schools are wonderful.
The biggest thing most Yanks object to here you won't find in any magazines or real estate brochures. That is our bugs. We have trillions of vicious nasty little biting bugs. Knats, mosquitos, ticks, biting flies, fleas, you name it. The Knats are the worst little things. You can hardly see them until they're swarming you and they do bite. As soon as the weather is nice enough for you to go out, it's nice enough for the bugs to follow. Most people get used to it, build a screened in porch, and love life despite the critters.
We are close to the beachs and many rivers. Atlanta is only a few short hours away although Savannah has much to offer in the way of culture and shopping.
Crime in Rincon isn't bad. It's terrible in Savannah and doesn't look to be improving.
The job situation depends on what you do. Most jobs here pay significantly below the national average. There are several large employers in the area and many many small businesses.
I hope this helps. I moved here 13 years ago from Germany and have lived a few other places in Georgia for school etc... I love the Savannah area although if you're moving from NY, you can expect a period of slight culture shock.

Rincon info
I appreciate your insight. I have done extensive research on small towns that we may like in a warmer climate. I like what you had to say about the climate, my husband wants to live in FL but I'm worried about the heat all year round. I don't like what you said about the bugs though. Is it like that in all parts of Georgia?
We live in NY, but are close to Buffalo, not NYC. I don't know if the culture shock would be that great, we have more cows in our small county than people (4,000)! If you have any other thoughts I would be interested.
P.S. We would be looking for jobs in education and law enforcement.

Rincon doesn't have a high school within the city, but there are two high schools in Effingham County.
The police chief is Mike Barton, who used to be with POST.
I believe Rincon's growth, which had slowed due to the water wars, is shifting back into gear. They may not experience the growth they had expected since all the infighting with the county commission and the EPD caused some developers to bail out and build in Pooler, instead.
Rincon is not all that close to the interstate (I-95 is next door, in Chatham County). Traffic in the city isn't too bad, but getting out of the city if you commute to Savannah (or anywhere in Chatham County) to work can be a nightmare.
All in all, Rincon is a pretty nice town. Great library.

We are about to move from Maryland to the Savannah area. We have looked at homes in Richmond Hill and like that area a lot. I'm originally from Atlanta and have family in Savannah. Do you know anything about flooding problems in Richmond Hill with any of the neighborhoods that are built so close to the marsh? They say it has been very dry down there for the past few years, but if the rain return to normal you could have sewage from the septic tanks backing up in your house. Know any other negatives in that area?

Short and to the point.
If your a Yankee from NY, don't move to Rincon.
They don't take to well to Northern Folk there. Period.

Traffic in both Rincon and Richmond Hill is a problem. Read the local newspapers. Poor planning. Too many subdivisions dumping traffic on to narrow roads. Every one heading to Savannah for work. No solutions for years. Look to West Chatham. Roads were built first then the houses.

Rincon
We moved here 13 years ago and have seen alot of change and still love it. The area has grown from 1 middle and 1 high school to 2 high schools and 2 middle schools. We are only 8 miles from the interstate. yes the traffic can get a bit much but it is alot worse in Savannah. I can only think of 3 murders here in all the years I have been here. Schools are great, we did try the Savannah schools for one year, not for us. I am a realtor now and am proud to call Effingham County my home. It is very family oriented, alot of parental involvement at the recreations and school level in all sports. Our teams constantly rank very high in both schools. There are alot of community service areas to get involved in. I am a yankee, and yes this is a different culture. Just don't try to change thier way of casual country living and have an interest in the history here and you will be accepted. By the way, there are now way too many real estate publications out here!! lol

There is no choice of schools in 'fingham. You send the kiddies to the assigned school. Check the school website for the school:
